The early Gothic Paterskerk (from Pater (Mönch), also: Begijnhofkerk ) is the ruin of the church of a beguinage in Tienen in Belgium .

history

After Liège , Tienen is considered to be the second foundation of a beguinage in what is now Belgium. In the Middle Ages, the Hof zu Tienen was considered to be extremely wealthy, as can be seen today in the size of the church ruins. The construction of the church in the form of a basilica began in 1245. The high Gothic choir and the side chapels were added in the 14th century. In 1843 the beguinage with the church was sold to the Dominicans , who set up a new monastery here. The name Paterskerk is derived from thisfor the sacred building. The Dominicans consistently removed baroque designs in the church and emphasized the old Gothic forms in restoration measures. In 1944 the church was badly damaged in a bombing. It has been in ruins since a devastating fire in 1976 that completely destroyed the nave.
