history

Town Hall and Gorgonius Church

The area of Hoegaarden was already settled in Roman times, as excavations of Roman villas in the 1980s showed. The place and the chapter of Hoegaarden, which was legally dependent on the Cologne cathedral chapter , were founded by Countess Alpaïdis / Alpeide, the last ruler of the County of Brunengruz / Bruningerode. After her death in 987, King Otto III. the county to Notger of Liege , the first Prince-Bishop of Liege . As a result, Hoegaarden was a Liège enclave in the Duchy of Brabant until the French Revolution .

Until the abdication of Emperor Charles V in 1556, Hoegaarden enjoyed a relatively quiet time. But when the Duke of Alba became governor of the Spanish Netherlands under Philip II , Hoegaarden also suffered from his reign of terror. During the Franco-Dutch War , Hoegaarden had to continually pay by military force for Liège to support Louis XIV's goals of punishing Holland and straightening the borders.

Under the Austrian rule (1714–1795) Hoegaarden experienced its golden age, whereby it owed its increasing prosperity above all to the brewery. In 1726 there were 36 breweries and about 110 malt houses there . Due to the wealth, the dilapidated Romanesque church could be replaced by a new building in the Rococo style . The Gorgonius Church is one of the few buildings in this style in Belgium.

Roundabout near the brewery

The French Revolution put an end to Hoegaarden's heyday. The competition from lager beer and the looting during the two world wars had a devastating effect on the Hoegaarden brewing industry. The last brewery was closed in 1957. In 1966, Pierre Celis revived the brewing tradition of the place by founding the De Kluis ("The Monastery") brewery , which was taken over by Interbrew (now Anheuser-Busch-InBev Group) in 1989 - four years after a devastating fire - and today continues to operate under the name Hoegaarden in the municipality.

Since 2004, the former chapter house of Gorgonius Church with its 4 hectare park has been a publicly accessible Flemish show garden with 26 themed gardens ( De Tuinen van Hoegaarden ).

politics

The municipal council ( Gemeenteraad ) has 18 members ( Raadsleden ), from which the college is formed with the mayor ( Burgemeester ) and four aldermen ( Schepenen ).
