Herne (Belgium) is a Belgian municipality in the Flanders region with 6,665 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). It consists of the eponymous capital and the two districts of Herfelingen and Sint-Pieters-Kapelle, which were incorporated in 1977 .

Geraardsbergen is 12 kilometers (km) northwest, Brussels about 27 km northeast and Ghent 40 km northwest.

The next motorway exits are to the south at Marcq and Enghien on the A 8 and to the east at Halle on the A 7 / E 19 . The municipality has a regional train station on the former Belgian line 123 (Geraardsbergen-Enghien). Brussels National Airport near the capital is the nearest international airport.

history

The most important historical building in Herne is the old Carthusian monastery , the first monastery that the Carthusian order founded in the historic Netherlands. In this monastery, the monk Petrus Naghel carried out the first real translation of the Vulgate into Middle Dutch (the so-called Herner Bible).
