Overijse is a Belgian municipality with 25,403 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) in the province of Flemish Brabant . It lies on the edge of the Sonian Forest in the southern part of Dijleland and borders on the capital region of Brussels , the Flemish municipalities of Hoeilaart , Huldenberg and Tervuren , the Walloon municipalities of La Hulpe and Rixensart and the Walloon city of Wavre . Overijse consists of the six districts Overijse-centrum, Jezus-Eik, Eizer, Terlanen, Tombeek and Maleizen . The IJse stream flows through Overijse , from which the municipality owes its name. The region around Overijse, Hoeilaart and Huldenberg is also called the Druivenstreek ("the region of grapes"). This is due to the traditional cultivation of table grapes, which are mainly grown in greenhouses , which are called serren in Flemish . It is guaranteed that Louis XIV already had table grapes brought from Overijse to his palace in Versailles . Even today there are traditional grape festivals in the area in late summer.
history
Overijse was first mentioned in 832 under the name Isca . Isca is a Latinized word of Celtic origin and means water .
Between 1001 and 1005 the community received the first rights from Otto von Niederlothringen , which allowed the residents to sell grain exempt from customs duties at the Brussels market.
In 1234 Henry I of Brabant granted the citizens of Overijses freedom rights, which placed them on a par with the citizens of Brussels, Wavres and Leuven .
With the beginning of the reign of the Lords of Witthem in 1345, Overijse began a period of decline. The negative climax was the year 1488, in which the village was burned down by the troops of the Roman-German King Maximilian I.
On October 10, 1677 Overijse was raised to the status of a principality under Eugen-Maximilian van Horne. The Prince's heirs were forced to sell the principality again in 1817.
In 1832 Overijse was awarded a Badge of Honor for sending volunteers to Brussels during the Belgian Revolution of 1830.
In 1840 King Leopold I gave the community permission to wear a coat of arms.
religion
In 2015, took over Roman Catholic religious congregation servant of Jesus and Mary (Servi Jesu et Mariae, SJM) canonically the old monastery Maleizen in the same district Overijses where they have the private school since the end of 2015 Sint-Ignatius operates. The school has state approval, but no church recognition, and has been checked by the Flemish Ministry of Education since January 2016. From 2015 to 2016 and again in 2018 allegations were made that the monastery and school were used or supported by right-wing extremist and Christian fundamentalist groups and people.
Attractions
The Tervuren arboretum , which can be reached from the Jezus-Eik district, is remarkable , where 460 important tree species from the northern temperate zones and the Andes are shown on 100 hectares in 40 geographically structured plots.
