Servants of Jesus and Mary

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Servants of Jesus and Mary ( Servi Jesu et Mariæ , abbreviation : SJM ) are a Catholic congregation for priests and lay brothers , founded in 1988 by Father Andreas Hönisch , a former Jesuit , and headed as a general of the order until his sudden death on January 25, 2008 has been. In 1994 the SJM were recognized by the Ecclesia Dei Commission as a congregation of papal law . The current Superior General of the Congregation is Father Paul Schindele SJM. One of its tasks is the pastoral care of groups of the Catholic Scouting Society in Europe .

history

Prehistory (1986 and 1987)

According to his own information from 1986, Andreas Hönisch, as Federal Curate of the Catholic Scouting Society of Europe (KPE), had already sent numerous young people to the Engelwerk who were striving for priestly ordination . Its sub-organization Regular Canon of the Holy Cross is the only religious order that he can recommend to the scouts of the KPE. On February 12, 1986 in Augsburg, Hönisch discussed plans to found another order related to the KPE with Ingo Dollinger , the rector of the Engelwerk University Institutum Sapientiæ in Anápolis , Brazil .

Foundation (1988)

The SJM emerged two years later on May 30, 1988 from the youth work of the KPE in Germany. For the seminarians and priests who had emerged from the KPE, it was difficult to continue providing pastoral care to the youth and scout groups due to their involvement in the training and pastoral structures of the various dioceses and orders. In order to remedy this, in 1988 three members of the KPE founded together with Fr. Hönisch the new community of the SJM, which should make it possible to better combine the priesthood and youth work.

Expansion (1989–1999)

In the period 1990–1992, the SJM Congregation, represented by Richard Pühringer CPPS , belonged to the umbrella organization United Apostolate in the Spirit of Mary , together with other Marian groups such as the European Catholic Scouting Association, the Engelwerk, Radio Maria and the Marian Priestly Movement .

In 1995, Bishop Viktor Josef Dammertz of Augsburg gave notice to the congregation to continue using the old Capuchin monastery in Markt Rettenbach , district of Mussenhausen . The new head office was then built in Blindenmarkt. Contrary to what is often claimed, there was never a ban on pastoral care for the SJM in the diocese of Augsburg.

At the end of 1995 the SJM and the priest Dietmar Aust FSSP successfully sued the news magazines News and Focus , which had unproven linked the congregation with the Society of St. Peter and the Community of St. Joseph .

Since 2000

In February 2000, the SJM priest Béla Horváth , who was active in the parish of Jossgrund in the diocese of Fulda , left the order, whereupon he was deposed as pastor by local bishop Johannes Dyba . In the parish there had previously been violent protests for Horváth's stay in the parish.

In the early 2000s the theologians Reto Nay and David Berger taught in the SJM training center in Blindenmarkt . Berger later distanced himself from the community. At the end of 2004 there were conflicts and mutual accusations between the servants of Jesus and Mary and parts of the Austrian KPE. According to reports from the community of St. Joseph and kath.net , two groups and three members of the local government led by priest Martin Leitner left the KPE-Ö, because in their opinion the German association - in particular Federal Curate Andreas Hönisch SJM - had tried to exert greater influence in of the Austrian organization. Hönisch stated that he was not aware of allegations with criminal consequences against SJM members and a negative mention in the sect department of the Archdiocese of Vienna . The part of the federal leadership that was close to Hönisch remained in office and stood behind the German federal curates.

After 2004, SJM and KPE failed with defamation suits against the journalist Georg Restle before several courts in St. Pölten and Vienna. Restle had stated that he had found homophobic and anti-Semitic statements in KPE publications .

Pope John Paul II and a group of KPE Girl Scouts in the summer of 2004

In October 2006, Bishop Johannes Dyba negotiated the representation contracts between the Diocese of Fulda and the Congregation by Bishop Heinz Josef Algermissen after differences between the Bishop and the SJM Superior General Father Andreas Hönisch had arisen. The affected parishes reacted with displeasure and incomprehension to the termination by the diocese of Fulda. In a signature campaign, over 75% of the parish members campaigned for the SJM priests to remain.

Since 2010

As of the beginning of 2013, SJM fathers were working in the diocese of Augsburg in Marienfried and Rennertshofen in pastoral care. In the church of Alsmoos in Petersdorf (Swabia) , where SJM sponsor Ingo Dollinger was the parish administrator until 1995 , they were allowed to work as temporary workers.

In 2016, the SJM promoted an event with Auxiliary Bishop Athanasius Schneider ORC, a high-ranking member of the Engelwerk, whose books Corpus Christi and Dominus est had been published by SJM-Verlag.In January 2016, Schneider visited the Belgian SJM branch Het Oude Klooster Maleizen in Overijse at the invitation of the rector of the SJM religious school Sint-Ignatius . The school was financed through the account of the creationist group Stop Christenvervolging under Fernando Pauwels, who was dismissed from the Catholic University in Leuven because of "too extreme religious views", and Yves Pernet, an activist of the right-wing groups Vlaams Belang and Voorpost and author of the Flemish -nationalist website Rechts Actueel , which supports the school with crowdfunding . The account manager was the Kerk en Geloof Foundation (Church and Faith). The school with five students was the subject of a debate in the Belgian Parliament in 2015 . Since its state recognition, the order has been able to issue fully valid school reports.

The Belgian Bishops' Conference declared in 2016 that the school had neither applied for nor received ecclesiastical recognition. After the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mechelen-Brussels and working for the Bishops' Conference Flemish school governing body "Katholiek Onderwijs Vlaanderen" had complained that run by the SJM school in the Old Monastery Maleizen offer an "unworldly education", launched in Flanders Education Minister and Vice Prime Minister Hilde Crevits (CD & V) in January 2016 a re-examination of the school. This was accused of creationism and right-wing extremism. Wouter Jambon, the school's first treasurer and chairman of the right-wing conservative student association KVHV , denied the latter. The school was able to continue its operations, subject to certain conditions and future inspections, after the offending parts of its website were deleted. The chairman of the Open Vlaamse Liberalen en Democrats in the Flemish Parliament, Jean-Jacques De Gucht , described the recognition of the school as absurd and unacceptable. Since 2018, the school has no longer been referred to by the Order as “our school”, but as a legally and financially independent “initiative of committed parents”. On its website, the school continued to state that it is supported and collaborated with the Order.

Current

In March 2018, Father Karl Barton SJM was installed as pastor of the Ronsberg- Ebersbach-Willofs parish in the diocese of Augsburg with the consent of the local bishop Konrad Zdarsa . In 2018 the novitiate of the order left the Auhof in Blindenmarkt and moved to Haus Assen in Germany.

In 2016, the renovation of the Assen house began, which after the storm "Friederike" showed severe damage to the roof structure and damage to the facade in the inner courtyard. The renovation work costs around 335,000 euros; the building project is financially supported by the state government of North Rhine-Westphalia, the federal government, the German Foundation for Monument Protection and donations.

Four postulants and one novice are currently completing either an introductory year or a trial internship at Haus Assen in Lippetal.

Positions

Self-presentation

According to its own self-image, the community tries to realize a religious life according to the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola . The essential points include: a. the daily renewal of the consecration to the Heart of Jesus and the Heart of Mary and the special devotion to St. Called the Eucharist . The priests of the SJM celebrate Holy Mass both after that of Paul VI. introduced new missal as well as in the so-called Tridentine rite . The SJM community is one of the few Catholic orders that celebrate both the ordinary and the extraordinary form of the Roman rite . The Second Vatican Council is "fundamentally positive about". The order has its focus on youth ministry and especially in the scouts - pastoral care and the care of groups of the Catholic scouting of Europe. He also cooperates with the Ancillae Domini community .

Opposing positions

Critics attributed the Congregation to Catholic fundamentalism and described it as "arch-conservative"; in the 1990s several German bishops refused to collaborate with the SJM. According to the priest Paul Hüster , head of the office for youth pastoral care of the German Bishops' Conference in 2000, SJM and KPE bear the characteristics of a sect . Rudolf Hammerschmidt , spokesman for the Bishops' Conference, explained: “The SJM endanger the peace of the church because their radicalism is not capable of integration. Especially young people are put under massive pressure by the order members to dedicate their lives to the church. "

organization

In July 2017, the order had 51 members according to its own information. The motherhouse of the SJM is located in Blindenmarkt (Lower Austria) in the diocese of St. Pölten , where the order was accepted by the then bishop and Engelwerk member Kurt Krenn .

The congregation also ran the Cardinal von Galen College in the moated Haus Assen castle in Lippetal ( North Rhine-Westphalia ), which Christoph Bernhard Graf von Galen gave to them in 1997; the college was canonically established on February 22, 2013 with the consent of local bishop Felix Genn . In the summer of 2016 the boarding school of the order housed in Haus Assen was closed. The closure was due to a lack of new students, at last only 10 students were taught.

On March 25, 2015, a house was canonically built in the old Maleizen monastery in Overijse (Belgium) after the then Archbishop André-Joseph Léonard of Mechlin-Brussels had given his approval. Léonard had already visited the monastery on April 11, 2014. Another branch in Germany is located in Markt Erlbach .

In Kazakhstan there is a branch of the order in Kornejewka, where it has been running the St. Lorenz School since 1996 .

The SJM is the Third Order of St. Ignatius of Loyola as a lay community of women and men.

As of November 2016, the SJM were active in pastoral care in several parishes in Germany, Austria, Belgium, France and Kazakhstan.

Media of the Order

The order's press organ is the quarterly magazine Der Ruf des König . The article series Katholisch im Kreuzfeuer also appears on the Internet as an aid to argumentation. The SJM-Verlag has its seat in Neusäß near Augsburg . It is from the publishing house “Hl. Father Maximilian Kolbe ” emerged.
