Georg Restle (* 1965 in Esslingen am Neckar ) is a German journalist . He is the director and presenter of the political magazine Monitor on the television program Das Erste .

Life

Career

Restle studied law at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg ( state examination ) and international law at the London School of Economics from 1987 to 1993 .

From 1991 to 1994 he was editor of the legal policy journal Forum Recht , at the same time he worked as a research assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Foreign and International Criminal Law in Freiburg im Breisgau . He was also a member of the working group of critical lawyers in Freiburg.

In addition to journalistic work for various daily newspapers, Restle also worked for the left-wing Radio Dreyeckland , Germany's first pirate broadcaster . After a traineeship at WDR , he worked as the author of numerous films and magazine articles for WDR and ARD . In 2000 he became editor at Monitor and in 2007 he took over the deputy editorial management. From 2010 to 2012 he was an ARD correspondent in Moscow .

Restle is a member of the selection committee for the German National Academic Foundation .

Legal dispute

After 2004 the Catholic Scouting Body of Europe (KPE) and the Order of the Servants of Jesus and Mary (SJM) failed in all instances with libel suits against Restle. In a report on Monitor , the latter stated that he had found anti-Semitic statements in KPE publications . The report remained online and is still available on the Internet Archive . In 2009 Restle published the court-approved report again.

Positions

Restle believes the political coordinate system has moved to the right. A red-red-green coalition should not be a “ no-go area ” for the SPD . In August 2017, his daily topics - commentary on refugee policies of individual EU countries spread virally on the Internet. He criticized the return of refugees to Libyan camps in an agreement with Niger , Chad and Libya . He also called it a “shame” that regimes that “have little or nothing to do with basic European values should be prevented from entering North Africa”.

Restle advocates, in his words, “value-oriented journalism”; He does not consider a neutral stance to be possible or even desirable. This self-image and Restle's participation in political demonstrations sparked a debate in which he was accused of abandoning the craft of journalism and pursuing political activism instead of journalism.

In a comment in the Tagesthemen on July 11, 2019, Restle described the AfD as the parliamentary arm of a right-wing extremist movement. After a comment critical of the AfD, Restle was threatened with death in 2019, according to the WDR; the WDR filed a criminal complaint.

Award

Restle received the 2020 Grimme Prize for journalistic performance on behalf of the Monitor editorial team .
