Adevărul ( Romanian truth ), before the 1993 spelling reform Adevĕrul , is a Romanian daily newspaper that appears in Bucharest .

With a monthly circulation of 152,720 printed copies, Adevărul is the fourth largest Romanian newspaper after Libertatea , Evenimentul Zilei and România Liberă with 1,312,960, 281,800 and 251,875 copies (June 2018).

history

It sees itself in the tradition of the Adevĕrul newspaper , founded in Iași in 1871 and later re-founded several times , which was the Romanian spelling of the term "truth" at the time. At times this also appeared as Adeverului or Adeverulu .

The publication of the newspaper has also been interrupted several times in the recent history of Romania . During the fascist dictatorship in Romania since 1937, Adevĕrul was banned as "Jewish" . During the communist dictatorship it could only appear in the period 1945–1951 and was closed until the end of 1989.

The first edition of today's newspaper appeared on December 25, 1989 immediately after the fall of the Romanian dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu .

Until the early 2000s she was close to the National Rescue Front as well as the Romanian government under Ion Iliescu and was criticized for anti-Gypsy statements.

The newspaper has taken an economically liberal position since the 2010s , without orienting itself towards individual Romanian political parties .

It is currently also published in Moldovan in the Republic of Moldova .
