Mussenhausen is a street village in Markt Markt Rettenbach and a Catholic pilgrimage site in the Upper Swabian district of Unterallgäu .
The village with around 190 inhabitants is located in the southwest of Mindelheim am Auerbach in an agricultural area. It is dominated by the pilgrimage church of Our Lady of Mount Carmel .
history
On May 1, 1978, Mussenhausen was incorporated into the Markt Markt Rettenbach.
History of the pilgrimage
The pilgrimage goes back to the Mussenhausen mercenary Philipp Schropp, who became a member of a Scapular Brotherhood in 1647 . In a serious illness he had a vision of Mary and after his recovery in 1649 he built a small wooden chapel in his orchard. There he put up a picture of Our Lady of Mount Carmel , which his brother Albrecht, a shoemaker in Eutenhausen and also a member of the Scapular Brotherhood, had painted.
Four years later, the wooden chapel was replaced by a brick church. Since more and more pilgrims came to the miraculous image , not least because of the official establishment of the Scapular Brotherhood in Eutenhausen in 1666, the church was enlarged in 1668/69 and in later years. In its final form it was consecrated in 1694 by the Augsburg auxiliary bishop Johannes Eustache Egolf von Westernach .
In 1700 the first pilgrimage priest moved into his chaplain house, the so-called "Klösterl". In 1858 Capuchins took over the pilgrimage. In 1988, Andreas Hönisch founded a new religious order here, the Servi Jesu et Mariae (SJM). In 1996 the community had to leave Mussenhausen Monastery.
Mussenhausen today
The interior of the pilgrimage church is particularly worth seeing. It was decorated in two sections around 1755 and 1763 in the Rococo style with stucco and frescoes . Johann Baptist Enderle painted the ceiling frescoes .
The shooting club "Hubertus" Mussenhausen was founded in 1924, the Eutenhausen-Mussenhausen band in 1935.
