Marian priestly movement

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Marian Priestly Movement (MPB) is a Roman Catholic association of priests with the aim of implementing the Revelation of Fátima . It is not canonically established. The MPB is one of the world's largest and most influential very conservative movements within the Roman Catholic official church .

history

On May 8, 1972, the Italian priest Stefano Gobbi took part in a pilgrimage to Fátima . In the Apparition Chapel, he prayed for some priests who, in his opinion, have lost faith and loyalty to the Catholic Church.

In the internal church controversy about the movement, one aspect revolves around the claim of Priest Stefano Gobbi to have received authentic inner interventions from the Virgin Mary . Gobbi noted the promptings in his mental diary. The vice-president of the Catholic broadcaster EWTN Colin B. Donovan, STL said about the inspirations of Gobbis: “In the case of accepted mysteries there is always the possibility that it is a mental illness, fraud, vivid imagination, or even the demonic. "

Since 1990 the MPB has been a voting member of the unified apostolate in the Spirit of Mary , which is not recognized by the church and is no longer active, and as such cooperated with other Marian groups such as the Servants of Jesus and Mary , the Catholic Scouting of Europe , Radio Maria Germany and the Engelwerk .

Membership requirements

Membership in the MPB requires the following obligations:

  • consecration to the Immaculate Heart of Mary
  • unity with the Pope and the Church associated with him
  • leading the faithful to a life of devotion to Mary . The aim is to let Mary act in her own life.

The “devotion to Mary” and the “obligation to repent” do not only consist of a one-off consecration, it demands from every believer a way of life that goes against the “prevailing fads, especially in the leisure sector”. This includes a critical attitude towards what is perceived as “challenging” and “shameless” clothing styles in the western world. In addition, the supporters of the movement should "defend themselves against any distribution of immoral publications in magazines, on television and in the theater". The followers of the movement should also avoid places "where the sacred character of their person is desecrated". The aim is to carry out a “ new evangelization of the world” under the beliefs of the MPB.

Members

The Marian priestly movement also spread through the book To the Priests, the Beloved Sons of Our Lady by Don Stefano Gobbi . The book contains the reflections and inspirations that Gobbi is said to have received in the form of inner inspirations . The book is not available in bookshops; it is distributed exclusively through the national secretariats or the regional leaders of the Marian priestly movement .

organization

The branches are located in Germany in Tengen , for Austria in Salzburg and for Switzerland in Baden . The International Center of the Marian Priestly Movement is located in Milan, Italy.

Theological background and connections

The priestly movement is controversial inside and outside the Catholic Church as an arch-conservative group.

The priestly movement supports conservative Marian veneration within the Catholic Church. On a picture on the homepage of the MPB you can see clergy in front of a statue where Mary stands in front of the cross on the globe. Symbolically and theologically, Mary is placed before the Trinity as the central figure of the Christian faith . Since 1990 the MPB has belonged as a voting member together with other Marian associations to the United Apostolate of Mary, which is no longer active today .

Regarding the theology of the Marian revelation movements, the Swiss theologian Scheidegger said in 1999 in connection with apocalyptic groups of prophets and sects of recent times that the tradition of Catholic “ private revelations ” goes back to the last century. Catholic-traditionalist groups such as the Marian Priest Movement , the Catholic Scouting Society of Europe (KPE) and the Order of the Servants of Jesus and Mary (SJM) lived from this kind of religiosity. These groups perceived “signs of the end times” in the world and society and wanted to restore true ecclesial community “so that at the end of time the obedient may be saved by God and may partake in the heavenly joys”.
