Three secrets of Fátima

Our Lady of Fátima (2004)

The three mysteries of Fátima are part of a message which the three shepherd children Lúcia dos Santos , Jacinta Marto and Francisco Marto, according to their statements, received on July 13, 1917 at the third apparition of Mary in the Cova da Iria near Fátima ( Portugal ) and not in 1917 were allowed to publish.

In 1927, Lúcia is said to have received permission to reveal the first two mysteries in a message from heaven. However, she had to burn this transcript again on the instructions of her pastor. On August 31, 1941, Lúcia wrote down the secrets again and gave the text to the Bishop of Leiria . Both secrets were released on May 13, 1942.

The first secret

“Our Lady showed us a great sea of fire that seemed to be in the depths of the earth. Immersed in this fire we saw the devils and the souls as if they were transparent black or brown, glowing coals in human form. They floated in the fire, thrown up by the flames that broke out of them together with clouds of smoke. They fell in all directions, like sparks in huge fires, without weight and balance, with howls of pain and screams of despair that made one tremble and freeze with horror. The devils were marked by a terrible and gruesome form of hideous, unknown animals, but they too were transparent and black. "

The second secret

“You have seen hell where the souls of poor sinners go. In order to save her, God wants to establish devotion to my immaculate heart in the world . If you do what I tell you, many souls will be saved and there will be peace. The war will end. But if you don't stop insulting God, under the pontificate of Pope Pius XI. another, worse start. When you see a night illuminated by an unknown light, know that this is the great sign God gives you that He will punish the world for its misdeeds through war, famine, persecutions of the Church and the Holy Father. To prevent this, I will come to ask for the Consecration of Russia to my Immaculate Heart and the Atonement on the first Saturdays of the month. If you listen to my wishes, Russia will be converted and there will be peace. If not, it will spread its heresies across the world, provoke wars and church persecutions. The good will be tortured, the Holy Father will suffer much, various nations will be destroyed, but in the end my Immaculate Heart will triumph. The Holy Father will consecrate me to Russia, which will be converted, and the world will be given a time of peace. "

The second secret is used as a prediction that the First World War will end, along with the prediction of another war during the pontificate of Pope Pius XI. in case people should continue to offend God and Russia should not convert, interpreted.

However, there are skeptics who doubt it is actually a prediction of events. They pointed out that the second prophecy was n't revealed until August 1941. At this point, however, the Second World War had already begun. It would therefore be a prediction ex eventu , i.e. not an actual prediction. There are similar doubts about the statement about Pope Pius XI. The Pope's name is not known until his name was proclaimed , but Pius XI. Elected Pope in 1922, also before disclosure in 1941.

The third secret

“After the two parts that I have already shown, we saw an angel to the left of Our Lady, slightly above, who was holding a sword of fire in his left hand; sparks and flames went out from him, as if they were to set fire to the world; but the flames went out when they came into contact with the splendor that Our Lady poured out on him from her right hand: the angel who pointed to the earth with his right hand and called out with a loud voice: Repent, repent, repent! And we saw in a tremendous light that God is: 'something that looks like people in a mirror when they walk past it' and a bishop dressed in white - 'we had the inkling that it was the Holy Father'. We saw various other bishops, priests, men and women religious climb up a steep mountain, on the top of which was a large cross made of raw trunks like cork oak with bark. Before he got there, the Holy Father was walking through a great city that was half destroyed and half trembling, his step swaying, depressed by pain and worry, praying for the souls of the corpses he met on his way. When he reached the mountain, he knelt at the feet of the great cross. Then he was killed by a group of soldiers who shot him with firearms and arrows. In the same way, little by little, the bishops, priests, religious and various secular persons, men and women of different classes and positions, died. Under the two arms of the cross were two angels, each holding a crystal aspergillus . In it they collected the blood of the martyrs and watered the souls who approached God with it. "

Lúcia wrote down the third secret on January 3, 1944. It was given to the Bishop of Leiria in a sealed envelope. Lúcia commented on the writing of the secrets with the words: “I will not leave anything out consciously. I may forget some details that are not important. ”On April 4, 1957, the envelope came into the Vatican Secret Archives . Lúcia had written on the outside of the envelope that it could not be opened before 1960. But it was not until June 26, 2000, that the content was made known by Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger and Archbishop Tarcisio Bertone .

On July 18, 1981, the Cardinal Prefect of the Congregation , Franjo Šeper , saw in the third secret a reference to the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II by Mehmet Ali Ağca on May 13, 1981 (on the anniversary of the first apparition of Mary in Fátima).

There was a lot of speculation about the third secret before it was published. Among other things, it was believed to predict a third world war or a nuclear war .
