Tervuren Arboretum

The Arboretum Tervuren is a 100 hectare collection of trees, i.e. an arboretum , with 460 different tree species (including 305 deciduous and 155 conifer species) near the Belgian city ​​of Tervuren . The collection includes typical tree species from temperate climates in the northern hemisphere and from the southern hemisphere from the Andes .

The Arboretum Tervuren is laid out as a so-called geographical arboretum, which means that each of the parcels forms a small forest of different species from a uniform region, from California to Alaska and also from the Andes . These parcels are usually separated by clearings or avenues. Twenty of the plots deal with landscapes in America (19 North America plus araucaria forest ) and twenty the Old World ( Europe , Asia , North Africa ).

The park is located 15 km east of central Brussels in Belgium between the municipality of Tervuren and the Jezus-Eik district ( Notre-Dame au Bois in French ) of Overijse .

history

The Arboretum Tervuren was created in 1902 under the direction of Charles Brommer, curator of the National Botanical Garden in Meise and professor at the Free University of Brussels .
