The Meise Botanical Garden ( Dutch Plantentuin Meise ; French Jardin botanique Meise ) is located in Meise in the Belgian province of Flemish Brabant .

history

After the old botanical garden on Rue Royale had become too small due to a growing collection, the botanical garden moved to its current location in 1939 after the Belgian state bought Bouchout Castle from the royal family in 1938 . The move came to a standstill due to the Second World War , but continued after the end of the war. In 1947 the construction of the Plant Palace began. In 1987 an extension became necessary for the growing herbarium .

Todays situation

The area of the garden is approximately 92 hectares and is home to 18,000 plant species. In 2014 ownership changed from state level to the Flemish Community . Steven Dessein is in charge of the garden .
