Tremelo is a Belgian municipality in the Flanders region with 14,914 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019).
Location and districts
Tremelo is located at the mouth of the Demer and Dijle . Leuven is 10 km south, the city center of Brussels 28 km southwest and Antwerp 30 km northwest.
The municipality of Tremelo consists of the main town and the districts of Baal and Ninde .
Birthplace of Damian de Veuster and place of pilgrimage
Tremelo is known nationwide as the hometown of the canonized Picpus father Damian de Veuster . He was born on January 3, 1840 in Ninde, a district of Tremelo that was incorporated in 1975. Soon after his death in 1889, pilgrims began to visit his living quarters. On the occasion of his canonization on October 11, 2009, a folk festival was celebrated (in the presence of the Belgian royal couple and numerous guests from Hawaii) and a memorial was unveiled.
The Damian Museum (Flemish: Damiaan Museum) is located in the house where Damian de Veuster was born.
