Birthplace of Damian de Veuster and place of pilgrimage

Tremelo is known nationwide as the hometown of the canonized Picpus father Damian de Veuster . He was born on January 3, 1840 in Ninde, a district of Tremelo that was incorporated in 1975. Soon after his death in 1889, pilgrims began to visit his living quarters. On the occasion of his canonization on October 11, 2009, a folk festival was celebrated (in the presence of the Belgian royal couple and numerous guests from Hawaii) and a memorial was unveiled.

The Damian Museum (Flemish: Damiaan Museum) is located in the house where Damian de Veuster was born.
