The Demer is a river in the Belgian provinces of Limburg and Flemish Brabant . It is a tributary of the Dijle and belongs to the catchment area of ​​the Scheldt . At Werchter it flows into the Dijle. The Demer is a typical rain flow: during periods of heavy rainfall it reaches a much larger amount of runoff than in periods of severe drought. The Demer rises in Ketsingen , a little east of Tongeren .

The origin of the name "Demer" goes back to the Celtic words for "dark" ("tam") and water ("ara"). So "Demer" means "Dark River".
