Huldenberg is a municipality in the south-eastern part of Dijleland in the province of Flemish Brabant in the Kingdom of Belgium . This municipality in Flanders has 9,921 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019) and since its merger in 1977 has consisted of the central town of Huldenberg itself and the districts of Neerijse , Sint-Agatha-Rode , Loonbeek and Ottenburg . Huldenberg itself was built in the 13th century and is located on the IJse river . The other districts are on the Dijle and the Laan . The municipality extends over two valleys and the landscape is therefore very varied and hilly.

The official language is Dutch . Due to its proximity to the Walloon Region , however, French “on the street” is by no means uncommon, especially in the village of Ottenburg, which is closest to the Walloon Region .

Huldenberg is one of the greenest and quietest communities in the country. There is no big industry and no major traffic artery runs through the area. This is characterized by many forests and fields as well as wide valleys, which were created by the mentioned rivers over time.

history

As early as 2500 BC Groß-Huldenberg was inhabited, especially in the district of Ottenburg, traces of this early settlement can be found. In the Romanesque period, two major roads crossed in Huldenberg: north-south the Walloon route, which connected Baucelet and Rumst, and a west-east route. Huldenberg was founded at the point where there was the "great bridge" over the IJse.

In the Middle Ages, the dukes of Brabant built churches in the districts that are still known today. Difficult times began in the 16th century, including political squabbles and the rise of Protestantism. The villages were looted. After the French invasion in 1795, the families that had ruled the villages up to that point were chased away. The villages that make up Groß-Huldenberg today were created.
