Londerzeel is a Belgian municipality in the province of Flemish Brabant with 18,749 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2019). It has an area of 36.29 km² and a population density of 517 inhabitants per km².
Place name
The place name Londerzeel comes from "Lundersala". The name comes from the second Frankish period, in which the word "Zele" was often used in names. The meaning of "Lundersala" is "home" or "house Lunder". In the dialect, Londerzeel is usually pronounced as "Lonnesieël".
history
Londerzeel was first settled around AD 600 to 750. The village of Londerzeel arose at the intersection of two old streets, namely Asse - Mechelen and Grimbergen - Puurs .
In the 11th century, Opdorp (Buggenhout) still belonged to Malderen (Londerzeel) . Later this was then separated and came to the County of Flanders . On the Ferraris map of 1777, Londerzeel is a relatively large village with 100 houses with jurisdiction.
After the municipal merger in 1977, the places Malderen and Steenhuffel belong to Londerzeel.
geography
The municipality is located in the Brabant Kouters region and is part of the green belt around Brussels .
Districts
In addition to Londerzeel itself, the community has two other sub-communities, namely Steenhuffel and Malderen. The merged municipality also includes the village of Londerzeel-Saint Joseph and other villages. These are Steenhuffel-Haan, Steenhuffel Heath, Sneppe Laar, Malderen-Herbodin and Malderen-Molenheide.
Neighboring communities
Londerzeel is located north of Brussels and borders the Antwerp municipalities of Puurs and St. Amands, the Flemish-Brabant municipalities of Merchtem , Meise and Kapelle-op-den-Bos, and to the west the East Flemish city of Buggenhout .
