Gregorio Benito Rubio (born October 21, 1946 in El Puente del Arzobispo , Toledo Province , † April 2, 2020 in Madrid ) was a Spanish football player .
Career
Gregorio "Goyo" Benito began his career with the small Madrid club Salesianos de Atocha before joining the Real Madrid youth team at the age of 16 . After four years in his youth, he went on loan to Rayo Vallecano , with whom he reached promotion to the Segunda División in his first season . Rayo didn't lose a single game, and the defense around Hernández, Chufi and Benito themselves made a name for themselves in Spanish football. After another season, coach Miguel Muñoz finally took him over to Real Madrid's first squad in 1968, but due to his military service it was not until October 27, 1969 that Goyo Benito finally made his debut. He immediately secured a regular place in central defense and achieved a total of eleven national titles in the following 14 years, including six championships and five cup wins . An international title, however, was denied him; although he reached the final of the 1970/71 European Cup Winners' Cup and the 1980/81 European Cup with Real Madrid, but lost to Chelsea and Liverpool .
Gregorio Benito was part of the Spanish squad at the 1968 Olympic Games , where his team reached the quarter-finals. He played 23 games with the Spanish senior team .
Benito is, besides Pirri, the only bearer of the Laureada ( laurel wreath ), an award with which Real Madrid rewards special sacrifice.
He died in April 2020 at the age of 73 as a result of a SARS-CoV-2 infection. Gregorio Benito was suffering from advanced Alzheimer's disease at the time of death .
