biography

Van Assche grew up as an only child in Londerzeel and attended a Catholic school. His father worked in the automotive industry, his mother was a secretary. At the age of 15 he attended weekend drawing classes for amateurs at an art school. Although he - according to his own admission - could not draw and sew well, at the age of 18 he passed the entrance examination to the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp . After completing his degree in 'Fashion', Van Assche received a position as a design assistant to Hedi Slimane in the men's fashion department at “ Yves Saint Laurent ” in Paris in 1998, initially as an intern . When Slimane moved to Dior Homme in 2000, Van Assche followed him there. Van Assche abandoned his original goal of designing women's fashion after a few seasons at Slimane's side.

The KRISVANASSCHE brand

In January 2005, Van Assche founded his own high-priced men's fashion brand in Paris called KRISVANASSCHE , which was owned by the Luxembourg- based company Frans SA . For this purpose he had given up his employment at Dior Homme in 2004 . His studio was on the Place de la République in Paris . His modern style between innovation and nostalgia in the collections, which are predominantly monochrome in gray, white and black, convinced buyers and the public. Typical of Van Assches own fashion brand were for example. Sporty, elegant jackets and jackets in different materials or combinations of materials over long, narrow dress shirts or polo shirts, variations of Reverskrägen , multilayer fabric constructions and the emphasized use of zippers and fabric folds . For a short time between 2007 (for the 2008 season) and 2009 (for the 2010 season) KRISVANASSCHE also offered women's fashion, which apparently was not commercially successful and was discontinued. From 2009 Van Assche published an artistic magazine called Londerzeel in relation to his fashion brand .

In 2011 and 2012 Van Assche cooperated with the luggage manufacturer Eastpak with its own fashion line and launched a limited luggage collection in the upper middle price segment under the name EASTPAK KRISVANASSCHE . In 2012 he entered into a collaboration with the jeans manufacturer Lee and presented a limited denim collection.

After ten years in the market, Van Assche announced in May 2015 that it would be discontinuing its privately owned Krisvanassche brand due to financial difficulties. The fashion brand's fall / winter 2015 collection was no longer in production. The company website has been deleted.

Dior Homme

After Hedi Slimane's departure as chief designer of “Dior Homme” in 2007, Dior Van Assche called back to Dior Homme as the successor to Slimane . Under Van Assche's direction, Dior Homme Mode became somewhat more commercial and therefore more wearable than Slimane's designs. Van Assche turned away from Slimane's preferred, very young and slim male models and Slimane's borrowings from the punk scene. In his designs, which have many elements of classic men's clothing - jackets, suits, pleated trousers, shirts - he often focuses on plain, monochrome models, predominantly in gray, beige, blue, black, white and brown, in narrow sizes and modern cuts. In 2010 he launched the Dior Homme Petite Taille (literally: “small size”) collection, which is aimed at female customers of the men's brand Dior Homme with a denim collection due to past demand .

In mid-March 2018, Dior's parent company, LVMH , announced that Van Assche would be replaced as chief designer at Dior Homme by Kim Jones, previously a men's fashion designer at Louis Vuitton .

Berluti

At the beginning of April 2018 it was announced that Van Assche would become chief designer at LVMH's own men's shoe and fashion brand Berluti . After two smaller collections in 2018, Van Assche presented its first complete catwalk collection for Berluti in January 2019 at the Opéra Garnier .
