Gerard Walschap

Jacob Lodewijk Gerard Walschap (born July 9, 1898 in Londerzeel , Belgium , † October 25, 1989 in Antwerp , Belgium) was a Flemish writer, known as a representative of Catholic - humanistic expressionism .

Life

Gerard was born as the second child of the landlord Florent Joseph Walschap and his wife, the shop owner Maria Anna Peeters. He had eight siblings. After attending primary school for five years, he switched to the boys' seminar in Hoogstraten. From 1912 to 1917 he attended the college of the Sacred Heart Missionaries in Asse . There he dealt with Greek - Latin humanities . He then studied philosophy and theology at the Scholastic of the Missionaries of the Sacred Heart in Heverlee . In December 1921 he returned his vow and went to Londerzeel. In 1922 he published his first collection of poems, "Songs of Suffering" (Liederen van Leed). On July 4, 1925, he married the poet Marie-Antoinette "Ninette" Theunissen in Maaseik . They had five children. In 1928 he wrote his first play.

In 1929 his novel Adelaide was published . This received massive resistance from the Catholic Church. Despite all the protests, Walschap received the August Beerneart Prize from the Royal Academy of Dutch Language and Literature and the Antwerp Province Prize for Literature in 1930 . In 1935 he was elected to the Dutch Society for Literature in Leiden. He gave many lectures in the Netherlands and Flanders . He also wrote radio plays for the NIR. In 1939 Walschap was elected an active member of the Royal Flemish Academy for Dutch Language and Literature. In 1940 he left the Catholic Church for good and became superintendent of public libraries. In 1950 he became Vice President of the Royal Academy of Dutch Language and Literature. The following year he became president of the same academy. That year he made a 3 month trip to the Belgian colony of the Congo.

In 1963 he retired as superintendent. 1967-1976 he was nominated by several associations for the Nobel Prize. In 1970 he ended his membership in the Royal Flemish Academy for Dutch Language and Literature and was made an honorary member at the same time. On April 25, 1979, his wife Ninette died. In 1981 he became a member of the Académie Européenne des Sciences, des Arts et des Lettres . Walschap died on October 25, 1989 in the presence of his son and doctor Guido.

Lyric work

The young Walschap is to be assigned to expressionism with a Catholic-humanistic character. His novel Adelaide (published in 1929. German title: “Die Sünde der Adelaide”), which reported on the everyday life of the peasants and citizens of Flanders, already belonged to the genre of psychological novel, which he with this and his following literary works, at least in the Flemish Language has played a decisive role. His writings emphasize the cultural and religious independence of Flanders, a theme that runs like a red thread through his works and, for example, in his books "Varweel dan '" (published 1940), "Salut en merci" (published 1955) and "Music voor twee stemmen ”(published 1963). Separatist political forces who fought for Flanders' independence liked to take his work for themselves, which earned him hostility from conservative circles and the backward-looking Church. Walschap then developed into an agnostic humanist, which is also reflected in his works.

The following quote is an example of his agnostic attitude:

"He who believes is not wise."

Another quote that criticizes society is the following:

"Taste is not a question of the majority."
