Otto (Lower Lorraine)
Otto (* probably 975; † June 7, 1005/1006) from the Carolingian family was the eldest son of Duke Karl of Lower Lorraine . He was probably the last male Carolingian. In the 19th century, however, the French medievalist Ferdinand Lot spread the theory that Otto's younger brother Ludwig lived until around 1012, after Karl Ferdinand Werner (1991/92) he died around 1023.
In 987, after the childless death of the French King Louis V, his father raised claims to the throne as his uncle; Hugo Capet , who was elected in his place, succeeded in capturing Karl in 991 and imprisoned him for the rest of his life.
Otto joined this year succeeded his father in Lower Lorraine and remained Duke until his death in 1005 or 1006. He stayed away from French politics and joined his stronger cousin of the second degree, the Emperor Otto III. , who he accompanied on his Italy campaign in 1002 and whose body he brought back to Aachen in the same year . He is no longer mentioned among Otto's successors.
Since Otto died unmarried and childless, the Duchy of Lower Lorraine was reassigned by King Heinrich II . His choice fell on Gottfried von Verdun , who was promoted to Duke as Gottfried II.
