Gottfried II. (Lower Lorraine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Gottfried II the childless (* around 965 ; † September 26, 1023 ) was the son of Count Gottfried the Prisoner of Verdun and Mathilde of Saxony. In 1012 he was installed as Duke in Lower Lorraine by the German King Heinrich II . This installation was part of the Ottonian policy to protect the west of their empire against France .

Because Gottfried did not come from Lower Lorraine , but from Upper Lorraine , he was not involved in the interests of the Lower Lorraine nobility and was therefore able to devote himself entirely to the interests of his king. In this sense, he undertook various campaigns against possible enemies of the empire. So he moved together with his brother Hermann von Eenham (Count in Brabantgau) against the Reginare (Counts of Hainaut and Leuven ) in the Battle of Florennes (1015) and against the Counts of Holland ( Battle of Vlaardingen , 1018).

On September 26, 1023 he died without descendants and his younger brother Gotzelo I followed as Duke in Lower Lorraine.
