The Battle of Vlaardingen took place on July 29, 1018 between Count Dietrich III. of Holland and an army sent by Emperor Heinrich II . The battlefield was north of Vlaardingen on today's Zouteveense Polder .

prehistory

Dietrich III, a vassal of Henry II, had the Vlaardingen fortress built and from there - without the permission of the emperor - collected customs from the merchants who had to pass this point in order to reach the North Sea from the important trading city of Utrecht .

Merchants from Tiel also alerted the emperor about violent attacks by Dietrich's people against them, whereupon the emperor decided to end Dietrich's rule and transfer the land to Adalbald II , the bishop of Utrecht .

The battle

A large imperial army under the command of the Duke of Lower Lorraine , Gottfried II , was reinforced by the troops of the Bishop of Utrecht Adalbald II, the Bishop of Liège Balderich II of Loon and the Bishop of Metz Dietrich II of Luxembourg against Vlaardingen. Dietrich III. and his little army set a trap north of Vlaardingen. When the imperial soldiers were already celebrating their victory, the Frisians attacked. The terrain was swampy, the battlefield narrow, and the locals used boats on the sluices washed up by the sea to support their troops.

The Battle of Vlaardingen turned out to be a tremendous victory for Dietrich. Most of the imperial army was killed, the surviving officers were captured and executed, the commander, Duke Gottfried, released a little later.

Effects

Dietrich III. was not only able to maintain his property after the victory, in addition, with the permission of the emperor, he was now allowed to collect customs duties from passing merchants from Vlaardingen.
