Hermann von Eenham

Hermann von Eenham († May 29, 1029 ) was Margrave of Eenham , Count of Verdun and from 1017 Count in Eifelgau and in Westphalia ( Stevergau and Borken ). He was the third son of Gottfried the Prisoner , Count von Verdun, from the Wigeriche family , and Mathilde von Sachsen from the Billunger family .

After the death of his father (i.e. after 995) he received the family estates in Brabant , especially the margraviate Eenham near Oudenaarde , which consisted only of a small district around the castle of the same name; after the death (1022) or already after the retreat of his brother Friedrich into the monastery (997) he got the county of Verdun. Shortly before his death, he retired to the Saint-Vanne monastery in Verdun in 1025 .

Hermann von Eenham is also the progenitor of the Counts of Calvelage and of the Counts of Ravensberg descended from them . The exact line of descent between Hermann von Eenham and Hermann I von Calvelage (documented 1072-1082) is not known.

Hermann and Mathilde were buried in Saint-Vanne in Verdun . The family castle Ename , at that time the strongest fortress in Lower Lorraine , was conquered and destroyed by Baldwin IV , Count of Flanders , as early as 1033/1034 .
