Reginar V.

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Reginar V. (French Régnier V de Mons , netherlands Reinier V. van Bergen ) (* around 995 , † after 1039 ) was Count of Mons .

Life

He came from the Reginare family and was the son of his father Reginar IV and his mother Hedwig of France. Grandparents on the maternal side were Hugo Capet and Adelheid of Aquitaine .

He succeeded his father in 1013 as (titular) Count in Hainaut and Count of Mons. Like his father, he stood in opposition to the dukes of Lower Lorraine and was anxious to regain the county of Hainaut. He fought together with his uncle Lambert I. von Löwen against Duke Gottfried von Niederlothringen . After the uncle's death, his son continued the alliance with Reginar. In 1018, the dispute was settled through the mediation of Henry II and the Bishop of Cambrai Gerhard I of Cambrai at a court day in Nijmegen . In order to secure the peace, Reginar married Mathilde von Verdun, a niece of the Duke and heiress of Hermann von Eenham . Through this, among other things, part of Brabant came to him as an inheritance . Reginar subsequently supported Duke Gottfried. Together they fought against Dietrich III. from Holland and were captured as late as 1018. Later both belonged to those Lorraine aristocrats who resisted King Conrad II after the death of Henry II . Later there was also a feud with the Counts of Flanders . Reginar's most important castle in Brabant, Eendam, was destroyed in 1033.

Like his father, Reginar V had a keen interest in the spiritual life of his time. He was in contact with the Abbot Olbert of St. Ghislain. He dedicated his life of Saint Veronus to him. However , he opposed the monastery reform initiated by Poppo von Stablo with the support of Conrad II and Bishop Gerard von Cambrai. He pressed the Abbot Heribrand, who was appointed by Gerard in S. Ghislain, so much that he asked the emperor for protection.

He had a child with his wife. It is somewhat unclear whether his successor as Count Hermann von Mons was his son or whether his wife Richildis was his daughter. She married Baldwin of Flanders for the second time .
