Gottfried the prisoner
Gottfried der Gefangene (* 935/940; † September 3, 998 ) was a Lotharingian Dux from the Wigeriche clan in the 10th century. He was a son of the Ardennes Gaugrafen Gozelo and his wife Oda. His brother was Archbishop Adalbero of Reims (969–989) and an uncle was Bishop Adalbero I of Metz (929–962).
Life
He appeared for the first time in 959 as Count of Bidgau and in 960 as Count of Methingau . Between the years 960 and 965 he was probably also appointed count in Verdun , since from this period he addressed several documents to the Abbey of Saint-Vanne and to the bishop of the city.
After Count Rainald's death , Gottfried was installed in 973 as his successor as Count in Hainaut . Together with Count Arnulf II of Cambrai , he was busy defending the brothers Reginar and Lambert , whose clan had once owned the Hainaut and who now tried to win it back with the support of the West Franconian King Lothar . On April 19, 976, in a battle near Mons , in which Gottfried was wounded, they beat back the brothers from Lotharingia. In 979 Gottfried successfully supported Count Arnulf II in the defense of Cambrai against King Lothar and against a subsequent attack by Count Odo von Vermandois . Since 981 he has been occupied as margrave ( marchio ) and duke ( dux ) of Ename .
King Lothar attacked Lotharingia again in 985, during the defense of Verdun Gottfried was captured with his son Friedrich and his uncle Siegfried and held for the following two years by Count Heribert the Younger of Meaux-Troyes . Only after the Carolingians had been deposed in Regnum in West Franconia in 987 and Hugo Capet had been made the new king, he was released after ceding some areas. In 995, Gottfried and two of his sons took part in the council of several prelates of the Eastern Empire with Archbishop Gerbert von Reims in Mouzon . He was mentioned in a document for the last time on April 6, 997, when he was led by Emperor Otto III. received confirmation of several donations of land to Mouzon Abbey. Gottfried died on September 3rd, the year of death is not known. However, Alberich von Trois-Fontaines reported that Reginar IV was able to recapture Mons from Gottfried in 998. Apparently he died shortly afterwards.
Around 963 Gottfried married Mathilde von Sachsen († 25 May 1008), a daughter of Duke Hermann Billung von Sachsen and widow of Count Balduin III, who died in 962 . of Flanders . Your children were:
