Balduin III. (Flanders)
Balduin III. ( Latin : Baldwinus ) (* probably around 935; † January 1, 962 ) was a count of Flanders in the 10th century. He was a son of Count Arnulf I the Great from the House of Flanders and Adele von Vermandois.
Baldwin is mentioned for the first time in 942 as a documented witness from his father in a donation to the Saint Peters Abbey in Ghent . In 954 he attested for the first time with the title of Count (comes) a donation from his mother to the same abbey. Apparently he was his father's co-regent in Flanders and held the county of Boulogne as his own fief. During his short term in office he established weaving and fulling in Ghent , thereby creating the economic basis of his country for the centuries to come. In 957 he unsuccessfully attacked Count Roger of Montreuil to take Amiens from him.
Baldwin fell ill with smallpox at Christmas 961 and died at New Year 962. He was buried in the Abbey of Saint-Bertin , where he had served briefly as the lay abbot. With his death, the county of Boulogne passed to his cousin Arnulf II .
Since 961 Balduin was married to Mathilde († 1008), a daughter of the Duke of Saxony , Hermann Billung . Their only child together was Arnulf II († 987), who in 964 succeeded his grandfather as Count of Flanders. Balduin's widow married Count Gottfried the prisoner of Verdun only shortly after his death .
