Arnulf II (Boulogne)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arnulf II (French: Arnoul ; † after January 31, 972) was a count of Boulogne and Ternois . He was a son of Count Adalolf von Boulogne († 933).

Little is known about Count Arnulf II. In 936, King Ludwig IV landed in the port of Boulogne after he had been proclaimed king by the West Franconian greats under the leadership of Dux Hugo Magnus . Arnulf is not mentioned among those present who received the king, but his uncle, Count Arnulf I of Flanders . The uncle probably took control in Boulogne and ousted his nephew of the same name from there. The count's son Baldwin I (III) appears in a donation to the Abbey of Saint Peter in Ghent in 954 with the title of count, which suggests that Boulogne had received from his father.

But in 962, Baldwin died before his father, whose influence began to wane. King Lothar took advantage of this to strengthen the royal power in the north. In the same year he entrusted Arnulf, son of Adalolf, with Boulogne, so that this county was no longer considered a fiefdom of Flanders, but a crown fiefdom and Arnulf II consequently appeared as the king's direct vassal. Nevertheless, Arnulf seems to have maintained friendly contact with his Flemish cousins, especially since the underage Count Arnulf II of Flanders , who had been in office since 954, was under the tutelage of his half-brother, Balduin "Baldzo". Arnulf himself acted in 972 as a witness to a donation from Count Arnulf II of Flanders to St. Peter's Abbey in Ghent . After that, nothing more of him has come down to us.

Count Baldwin II of Boulogne was probably his son.
