Paul Van Dooren

Paul Van Dooren (born November 5, 1950 in Tienen ) is a Belgian mathematician who specializes in numerical mathematics .

Life

Van Dooren graduated from the Catholic University of Leuven with a degree in computer science in 1974 and received his doctorate there in 1979. In 1978/79 he was at the University of Southern California and 1979/80 at Stanford University with a Fulbright scholarship . From 1980 to 1991 he was at the Philips research laboratories in Belgium. From 1991 he was professor at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and from 1994 at the Catholic University of Leuven (professor of mathematical engineering ) in Louvain-la-Neuve.

He deals with numerical linear algebra, systems and control theory and numerical methods for large graphs and networks. In 1998 he was visiting professor at Florida State University and in 1985 visiting scholar at the Australian National University in Canberra.

In 1989 he received the James H. Wilkinson Prize , the Computer Science Prize from IBM Belgium in 1974 and the Householder Award in 1981. 1997 to 2002 he was editor of the SIAM Journal of Matrix Analysis and Applications. He was co-editor of Numerical Mathematics, Numerical Algorithms, 1993-1996 of the SIAM Journal on Control and Optimization and other journals. In 2010 he received the Franqui Chair in Antwerp. In 2016 he received the Hans Schneider Prize for his contributions to linear algebra.
