The 34th Burgos Tour ( Vuelta a Burgos ) took place from August 1st to 5th, 2012 in the Spanish province of Burgos . The cycle stage race was part of the UCI Europe Tour 2012 , in which it was classified in the highest category 2nd HC, and was held in five stages over a total of 775 kilometers. After winning the first two sections, Spaniard Daniel Moreno was able to defend the overall leader's gray jersey to the end and relegated the two Colombians Sergio Henao and Esteban Chaves , the winners of the last stage, to their places.

At the start there were a total of 18 professional teams , eight of them ProTeams . In addition, eight Professional Continental Teams as well as the two Spanish Continental Teams Orbea Continental and the local Burgos BH-Castilla y León received a start authorization.

Track and course of the race
The tour, organized by the provincial government of the province of Burgos , began in the town of Miranda de Ebro , north of Burgos , from where the first and at the same time shortest stage of the race took the riders over 135 kilometers northwest to the karst region of Ojo Guareña . The breakaway group of the day consisted of about twenty riders, who were never able to distance themselves more than two minutes from the peloton and together they reached the first mountain classification at Alto de Bocos (3rd category) 53 kilometers from the finish. The Spaniard Aitor Galdós from Team Caja Rural was able to secure all three intermediate sprints and thus laid the foundation for his later victory in the sprint classification. 23 kilometers from the finish line, the 1,400 meter final climb of the third category was reached for the first time, but six kilometers later the leading group was caught up again. The Briton Ian Stannard ( Sky ProCycling ), who then withdrew as a soloist, had to give up 1000 meters from the finish line. In the mountain sprint, Daniel Moreno ( Katusha Team ) finally won ahead of Sergio Henao , Matti Breschel , Allan Davis and Nacer Bouhanni .
Moreno, team-mate of last year's winner Joaquim Rodríguez , repeated his success on the second stage, which ran over 141 kilometers around the provincial capital of Burgos and ended on the castle hill , which had to be climbed three times (3rd category). Shortly after the neutralized start, the field of riders was stopped again to honor the local cycling club's 100th birthday. Then Romain Sicard ( Euskaltel-Euskadi ) and David Belda ( Burgos BH-Castilla y León ) were able to pull away and gain a lead of a maximum of two and a half minutes over the peloton. After three other riders had been able to catch up to the front, the breakaway group was set up again fourteen kilometers from the finish. On the final climb, Moreno was unbeatable again and won with two seconds ahead of Henao and seven on Simon Clarke ( Orica GreenEdge ), which allowed him to extend his lead in the overall and points classification.
The third stage from Santo Domingo de Silos to Lerma again had three mountain ratings in the 3rd category, including the Alto del Majadal, which had to be mastered twice, but ended on flat terrain, so a mass sprint was to be expected. Before that, however, José Vicente Toribio ( Andalucía ), Alessandro Donati ( Acqua e Sapone ) and David López ( Movistar Team ) pulled away from the field. The trio was caught by the peloton before the finish, but Toribio collected enough points for the mountain classification to take over the red jersey from Daniel Moreno. After preliminary work by his Rabobank team- mates, the Dane Matti Breschel won the sprint . For him it was the first success since 2010 and the first in Rabobank Jersey.
The fourth part of the day came to an end in the old Roman city of Clunia after 170 flat kilometers without a mountain classification. To reach the goal, a non-categorized ascent had to be mastered, which the German Paul Martens conquered the fastest from the top group of twelve in order to give his Rabobank team the second day in a row. Daniel Moreno came in two seconds behind and was able to extend his overall lead, especially since the previous second overall Sergio Henao lost 32 seconds and thus fell back to tenth place. The breakaway group of the day - including Mikel Astarloza ( Euskaltel-Euskadi ) and Juan Antonio Flecha ( Sky ProCycling ) - hadn't come through before.
On the last and decisive stage of the Burgos Tour 2012, the field had to overcome the Alto del Cargadero (2nd category) and the Alto del Collado (also 2nd category) twice. In addition, there was a mountain classification in the 3rd category, the Pazil de Rozavientos (1st category) and the final ascent to the Lagunas de Neila (special category), on which the riders had to overcome inclines of up to 17% on 9.7 kilometers. Christian Meier ( Orica GreenEdge ), Jérémie Galland ( Saur-Sojasun ), Jarlinson Pantano ( Colombia-Coldeportes ), Ian Stannard ( Sky ProCycling ) and Sergio Pardilla ( Movistar Team ) formed the breakaway group of the day. Pardilla was able to win two of the seven mountain classifications and thus won the red jersey of the leader in the mountain classification with just two points ahead of Pantano . On the final ascent, the group was gradually put back, while the two Colombians Sergio Henao and Esteban Chaves (Colombia-Coldeportes) launched an attack, which was supported by the former runaway and team-mate of Chaves, Pantano. In the overall standings, Henao was only 32 seconds behind overall leader Daniel Moreno, who tried to limit the gap on his own. The Spaniard finally succeeded, and although Henao was within two seconds of the leading jersey at times, Moreno defended a lead of ten seconds and finished fourth 22 seconds behind Henao. Chaves secured the day segment ahead of Henao and Igor Antón ( Euskaltel-Euskadi , + 11 sec.).
