Osmolality
The osmolality b osm indicates the molality of the osmotically active particles in a solution :
With
- n osm : Amount of substance of osmotically active particles (e.g. ions , grape sugar , proteins )
- m Solvent : mass of the solvent , usually water.
The unit of measurement for osmolality is osmol / kg. The determination of osmolality from urine , serum and plasma is important in clinical chemistry .
Not to be confused with the osmolality of the Osmola r ity , which refers to the volume of the solution.
