history

Around 1030 the Kohlscheid area belonged to the possessions of the Aachen Count Palatine Hermann Hezelo (Richterich). From 1140 to 1225 it was a fiefdom of the Counts of Heinsberg. The area was dominated by agriculture, as evidenced by the mention of the following farms and hamlets: Horbach 1073, Oberfronrath 1112, Berensberg 1150, Geuchter Hof 1240, Mühlenbach 1241, Schönau 1280, Wilsberg, Ürsfeld and Biesenhecken 1290, Heyden 1288 (1303), Bank 1361, Forensberg 1365.

Heyden Castle came to the Counts of Jülich as pledge in 1361. Duke Wilhelm II installed Gothard von Bongart as lord of Heyden and formed the sub-rule Zur Heyden from the places Richterich, Horbach, Bank, Berensberg and Eygelshoven. This existed until the French invaded in 1794.

In 1524 the name “Scheit” appeared for the first time in writing, referring to the area of today's Südstraße, from about Kaiserstraße to the market. Log means border, but also ridge, in our case between the Wurmtal in the east and the Amstelbach in the south.

Later the “Heydener Ländchen” was divided into the following quarters: Eygelshoven, Horbach, Richterich, Scheit (Scheid), Klinkheide and Bank. Due to the increasing population and the boom in coal mining, Scheid and Klinkheide were each raised to a quarter next to Pannesheide, Rumpen and Hasenwald (Berensberg). In the 18th century the name Kohlscheid (instead of Scheit / d) was unofficially established. The French initiated a reorganization of the administration: the Heyden rule became the "Pannesheyd" community; these included Kohlscheid, Klinkheide, Pannesheide, Gracht, Kesseles, Rumpen, Berensberg and Hasenwald. The whole was incorporated into the department de la Roer.

After the Congress of Vienna in 1815, the entire area became part of Prussia. The Aachen district was founded. The places mentioned were merged to form the mayor's office in Heyden. From 1849 the special communities of Pannesheide and Richterich were set up, administered in a personal union by a mayor in Richterich, with assigned mayors in the individual districts. From 1886 to 1905 Freiherr von Broich zu Haus Schönau from Richterich worked (on a voluntary basis). Since 1904 the municipal council has already held its meetings in Kohlscheid. Because of the settlement focus and the seat of mining and other industries (needles, cigars), attempts have been made since 1905 to change the name of the municipality in Kohlscheid. In the same year, the government president allowed the mayor's office for the municipality of Pannesheide to be relocated to Kohlscheid (Weststrasse 44). From April 3, 1906, Josef Lambertz was introduced as acting (full-time) mayor. At this time, the preparatory work for the construction of its own town hall began. This was built in 1907/08 in Kaiserstraße according to plans by the Aachen government master builder Schmidt.

On January 16, 1908, the local council finally decided to contact the Minister of the Interior to have Pannesheide renamed Kohlscheid. The emperor agreed on September 29 of the same year.

In 1913 the head office and the central office of the Eschweiler Mining Association (EBV) moved from Eschweiler- Pump to Kohlscheid, as the focus of coal mining of the EBV had shifted from the Inderevier to the Wurmrevier . The Laurweg mine , whose coal mining was stopped in 1955, was located in Kohlscheid .

On January 1, 1972, the Kohlscheid community was merged with the existing city of Herzogenrath and the Merkstein community to form the new city of Herzogenrath .
