history
The already established in 1852 at the opening of the railway station building was completely destroyed in World War II and replaced in the 1950s by a new building. This was rebuilt in 2012–2013 and since then has included the travel center, a kiosk, a hotel, a café-restaurant and a few shops. The stop has two side platforms. There are park-and-ride parking lots and options for changing to express bus , regional bus and city bus services nearby .
While the Erkelenz station lost its importance in freight traffic with the shift of heavy goods traffic from rail to road in the 1980s, passenger traffic developed in such a way that today the station is the most important stop between Aachen Hauptbahnhof and Mönchengladbach - in terms of boarding and alighting numbers Central station is. From 1992 to 2002, Erkelenz was also an InterRegio stop for the Aachen - Chemnitz route . With the conversion of the railway line to ESTW operation in November 2007, the switch connections were cut, making the station operationally a stop, and new Ks signal systems were put into operation. The third track, which had been in place until then, but has not been used for passenger train stops since the reconstruction of the central platform, could not be used and evasion was no longer possible. It was later completely dismantled.
