history

Uevekoven appears in a Wegberger tax list from 1397 as "Ovekoven" and in earlier times belonged to the Wegberg manor . In later documents it is called "Uvekoven" (1509) and "Uffigkoven" (1561). Around 1800, local development began to increase at the level of the Uevekoven chapel .

religion

chapel

Uevekoven belongs to the parish of St. Peter and Paul in Wegberg. The chapel in the center of the village was built in a neo-Gothic style in 1903/04 according to plans by the cathedral master builder Franz Statz from Cologne . A roof turret rises above the brick chapel with three window axes and a vestibule .

The old Uevekovener chapel, built in 1682, was expanded and enlarged in 1785. It was in the same place, was much smaller and also made of brick and had a roof turret. A legacy formed the basis for the establishment. As with many other church buildings from earlier times, the construction costs were largely borne by voluntary contributions from the local population.

War memorial, memorial cross

The war memorial at the St. Barbara chapel in Uevekoven dates from 1955. It is built in an altar-like shape and bears the inscriptions 1914–1918 and 1939–1945 in its lower area.

The direction of the entrance Erkelenz location memorial cross was erected in 1749 for the deceased on 14 October 1749 Anton Theullen from Uevekoven of his father.

Infrastructure

In June 2011 690 people lived in Uevekoven. There are several farms here, some with horse keeping, two carpenters, a gardening shop, a cosmetic studio and a few commercial and small businesses. Bus and school bus stops provide connections to the schools as well as to the cities of Wegberg, Erkelenz and Mönchengladbach . A children's playground is available.

Others

  • The county waterworks Heinsberg has engaged in Uevekoven its headquarters and since 1934 the regional water supply . The operator supplies 130,000 residents in the cities of Erkelenz, Hückelhoven , Wegberg and Wassenberg with drinking water . The water comes from the water extraction systems in Uevekoven, Matzerath , Beeck, Arsbeck , Wassenberg, Holzweiler and Erkelenz. The annual water discharge is approx. 7.1 million m³.
  • The water tower , a 53-meter-high architectural monument no. 158 that is visible from afar, is located west of Uevekoven. The tower was built in 1934. Its container holds 400 m³. It was in operation until the early 1980s and is now used as an apartment and architecture office. The description of monument no.158 reads: The Uevekoven water tower is a brick tower that was put into operation in December 1934. It is provided with a double-shell construction to keep the drinking water fresh even at high outside temperatures. Inside the wall rim there is a reinforced concrete container . The tower has a ring of six concrete pillars whose buckling length is shortened by freely drawn-in ceilings. The pillars surround the tube that contains the stairs to the container, the base plate of the container protrudes above them. The cylinder of the water tower head is divided horizontally by several plaster strips . The light openings are arranged as horizontal formats between these bands. Standing on a slight hill at the edge of the Tüschenbroich forest, the tower takes on the character of a landmark in the otherwise flat landscape . The unchanged preservation and the clearly legible affiliation of the water tower to the architectural style of brick expressionism make the building important for Wegberg and its residents, as well as for the development of the buildings for the drinking water supply.
  • A weather station has been in operation near the Uevekoven district waterworks since January 2008 as the 449th weather station of Meteomedia Germany . It is the first measuring station in the city of Wegberg and, next to the weather station in the municipality of Selfkant, the second in the district of Heinsberg .
