history

In the Middle Ages, Gripekoven was the aristocratic residence of the Lords of Gripekoven, which probably dates back to the Carolinian period. The place was first mentioned in documents in 1225. The castle Gripekoven was established in 1326 as the elaborate fortifications completed. In the late Middle Ages, European knighthood lost its military importance. The associated economic and social decline resulted in robber barons with looting, extortion and raids. Renegade knights are said to have carried out their raids from Gripekoven Castle. The reputation and existence of the Duchy of Jülich was called into question by the robbery and a revolt of the Jülich knighthood . The renegade knights had withdrawn to Gripekoven Castle in 1354 when the troops of the Maas-Rhine Peace Alliance of the Counts of Jülich and Heinsberg, the Archbishop of Cologne and the cities of Cologne and Aachen set out to conquer the Gripekoven Fortress. There was a lengthy siege, which finally ended with the surrender of the castle and free withdrawal of the besieged. Then the castle was razed to the ground. Today you can only find mountain hills with some wall remains and the trenches that were dug around this castle in the broken terrain behind the village. People still say in Gripekoven that the chapel in Gripekoven was built with the stones from the destroyed castle.

Infrastructure

In June 2011 there were 40 people living in Gripekoven. There were three farms and two horse farms as well as a roofing company. The village is rural with no through traffic. A school bus stop provides connections to the schools in Beeck and Wegberg.
