history

The name Rickelrath is mentioned as "richolferod" (= clearing of Rickolf) in a document issued by Emperor Otto I in 966. This small place is probably the earliest documented part of the city of Wegberg. Another remarkable feature is the original layout of the village. It is called " Angerdorf " because its houses and farmsteads are grouped around a large, elliptical meadow, the Anger . The main road cuts through this hill. Originally only the village cross and the church stood on one side of this street . On the Angerweg, which looped around the aforementioned meadow, there are remarkable residential buildings and courtyards, some of which have the shape of a Franconian residential complex .

The parish elevation of Rickelrath was in 1804. The first church in the village was built in 1683 by chaplain Matthias Poorten. In 1830 the current church tower was added. Due to lack of space and dilapidation, the church was demolished in 1953 and rebuilt. The village cemetery was originally the churchyard. A few gravestones on the northern church wall remind of this . The oldest is 1698.

The current churchyard on Dülkener Strasse has, in addition to some beautiful, old tombstones, above all that of Pastor Anton Heinen , who after his active, very fruitful work in the Mönchengladbach Volksverein spent his retirement years as a pastor in Rickelrath from 1932 to 1934. His gravestone was designed by the artist Hein Minkenberg . It shows a sower bowed under the burden of his work. At the foot of the pedestal you can read: "I am a grain of wheat of Christ."

Anton Heinen (1869–1934) was a pastor in Rickelrath and a popular educator. His work comprises around 300 books and essays. He was an employee of the Volksverein for Catholic Germany . The community college of the district of Heinsberg is named after Anton Heinen . Rickelrath has three mills: the Holt , the Schrof and the Molzmühle . They are on the right side of the Mühlenbach (Alsbach), which rises near Kipshoven , runs in a north-westerly direction and flows into the Schwalm at the Molzmühle . He runs four mills on his way. The fourth, the Buschmühle , is on the left side of the brook and, since the brook was the border between two mayor's offices, belongs to Beeck .

Infrastructure

In June 2011 there were 703 people living in Rickelrath. There are several farms, pubs and restaurants as well as some small businesses. Bus and school bus stops provide connections to the schools as well as to the cities of Wegberg, Erkelenz and Mönchengladbach . The forest kindergarten "Waldgeister eV Rickelrath" is available for the children.
