The Schrofmühle is an old watermill on Mühlenbach in the town of Wegberg between the districts of Wegberg and Rickelrath in North Rhine-Westphalia. It is considered one of the best preserved in the country. An undershot water wheel drives an oil mill and an oil press, as well as a grain mill with a bag lift. The mill and the associated courtyard have been in the family for over two centuries. Today it is run as a museum. The promotion and museum association Schrofmühle Rickelrath eV is dedicated to the care and maintenance of the mill.
location
The Mühlenbach is a right tributary of the Schwalm and once drove five mills. Below the Schrofmühle is the Molzmühle, and above the Busch, Holt and Vollmühle on the stream.
Waters
The Mühlenbach, which begins in Herrath and flows into the Schwalm immediately behind the Molzmühle , has a length of 13,475 m. The beginning of the stream is 77 m above sea level. NN, the mouth at 61 m above sea level. NN. Between Kipshoven and Holtmühle, the Mühlenbach forms the city boundary between the Heinsberg district and the city of Mönchengladbach . When you reach the Molzmühle, the Mühlenbach ends at this point and passes its water on to the Schwalm. The care and maintenance of the water is the responsibility of the Schwalm Association , which is based in Brüggen .
history
The courtyard connected with the mill apparently dates back to the Franconian times. The name "Schrof" refers to a swampy break area of the Mühlenbach. The mill was first mentioned in a document in 1588 in connection with a court case. Today's main building was built in 1850. Around 1950 the mill operation, which was now based on a diesel engine, was discontinued. Between 1977 and 1982 the mill pond was desludged and the now listed facility with the original waterwheel drive was restored.
Mill Museum
Today, guided tours are organized on fixed dates or by arrangement and the various parts of the mill are clearly put into operation.
