geography
The Bockenmühle is located on the Schwalm in the Watern district in the middle town of Wegberg in the Heinsberg district . A mill pond, which still exists today, served as a water reservoir for the mill operation.
Waters
The property is located on the right side of the Schwalm, which has its source 4.2 km away in Genhof (district of Erkelenz). The Schwalm has a total length of 45,132 m up to its confluence with the Meuse near Swalmen (Netherlands). The source is at 83 m above sea level, the mouth at 14 m above sea level. The care and maintenance of the water is the responsibility of the Schwalm Association , which is based in Brüggen .
history
At an idyllic mill pond in Watern you can first find the Bockenmühle with its undercut steel mill wheel and wooden shovels, which owes its name to the owner Christian Bocken, who took it over from his parents in 1826. At that time the mill with its two grinding cycles and an oil press was used to capacity for up to six hours a day. During a mill renovation in 1847, the old wooden ark was replaced by a concrete ark and could then be operated for up to ten hours a day. In 1864, the Frings family took over the mill, which remained in the family until 1914 before Heinrich Brocker bought it. Even today, the grinder is in pretty good condition, on which rye was ground up until 1960 - albeit almost exclusively electrically. Inside the mill there is a bar with the inscription: "1769 - GFB + MCD" According to tradition, this bar comes from the Roßmühle, which was demolished at the time and which stood not far from the Roßweiher.
In the mill garden behind the building, a mighty stone cross with the inscription "Anno 1837" reminds of the time of the Bocken family. The couple let it go out of gratitude when their son unexpectedly returned home from Napoleon's Russian campaign as one of the few .
Monument entry
The two-storey house was built in 1829 as a four-winged complex in brick with door walls and window sills in bluestone and globes on the windows, also in bluestone. In the door lintel there is a monogram with the year 1829. Mill pond, weir and an iron mill wheel are still there. The rear side wings of the four-wing system have been renewed or no longer exist.
