geography

The Wegberger Mühle is located on the Rathausplatz in the Mittelstadt Wegberg in the Heinsberg district . The mill building is in a central location between Wegberg Castle and the parish church in close proximity to the Wegberg city administration. The water level of the mill pond upstream at that time, today's pond , of the city park, is 63 m above sea level.

Waters

The Wegberger mill got its water from a large, upstream mill pond through which the Schwalm flowed. The Schwalm and the Beeckbach unite just a few meters from the mill pond .

“The Schwalm as a world of experience” - according to a press release on February 25, 2012. The Schwalm Association is expanding the Schwalm as a world of experience near the Wegberger mill and the town pond . The aim is to allow the natural course of the river through a wide river bed and flat banks to become a new habitat for many plant and animal species. The planting should be completed by the end of March 2012.

The "Schwalm Water Experience" nature park has been set up just a few kilometers from the Schwalm spring. The newly created water landscape is located in the city park and connects to the central shopping streets and the Wegberger mill. The joint project has now been presented to the public.

history

The Wegberger Mühle, also called Ramachers Mühle, is a former oil and grain mill, which is centrally located on the Schwalm between the castle and the church. In 1560 it was bought by the new owners of Wegberg Castle, the Lords of Nesselrode zu Ehreshoven . They lease the mill. A surviving drawing from 1726 suggests that the mill was of economic importance. The mill remained in the possession of the von Nesselrode family until the second half of the 19th century.

The name Ramachers Mühle goes back to the miller family Ramachers, who acquired the mill in the middle of the 19th century and operated it until the end. A large mill pond was part of the mill located just a few meters after the Beeckbach merged with the still young Schwalm. Today's pond in the city park goes back to him. The damming of the water and the resulting frequent floods caused complaints among the Wegberg residents for a long time. In 1927 the Wegberg community bought the storage right ; the use of the water wheel was given up and the mill continued to operate with an electric motor . In 1960 the grinding operation was completely stopped. In 2004 the partially listed building was bought by the city of Wegberg. The building was rebuilt and has served the city of Wegberg for cultural purposes since 2009. The historical association Wegberg eV found its domicile in the Wegberger Mühle and maintains club and assembly rooms as well as a library here. Furthermore, the Lebenshilfe Heinsberg operates the Cafe Samocca in the Wegberger Mühle, which also houses the tourist information point.
