history

Moorshoven (translated: courtyard in the moor) emerged from an aristocratic farm that was later expanded into a castle . The moats of the former castle, Haus Moorshoven , can still be seen today . A noble family from Moorshoven first appeared in the 13th century. The earliest known mention of a lord von Morshoven dates back to 1242. Another document mentioning Moorshoven is from 1294/95, where Sibertus and Goswin von Moorshoven are named as vassals in an invoice from the county of Geldern . After a varied history of ownership, the castle was sold to the von Beeck family at the beginning of the 17th century. Franco von Moorshoven was captured and executed as a robber baron in 1354 by the Archbishop of Cologne . That was the same year that the castle in Gripekoven was razed. The medieval moated castle of the gentlemen of Morshoven was a diet capable knight's seat . In the 19th century, the now dilapidated castle complex was replaced by a new courtyard, the Moorhof.

Infrastructure

In June 2009 a total of 219 inhabitants lived in the village. There are two restaurants / hotels with overnight accommodation, four farms, three horse farms and an electrical company, as well as a few small businesses. A children's playground is available.

In 1869, the municipality of Beeck's first steam engine was put into operation in Moorshoven . It had 8 hp and drove the machines in a flax swing and wadding factory in Steinstrasse 12 (Winand Büschgens).

religion

chapel

Moorshoven has belonged to the Beeck parish from the earliest times. In 1746 an oak cross was erected at the current location of the chapel . In the same year crosses were erected in Rath-Anhoven and in Schönhausen after a popular mission . Since this mission cross in Mooshoven was exposed to wind and weather, a house was built around the cross from stones from the ruined castle complex, today's chapel. It is dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi .

Hail cross

The hail cross on the street Am alten Schlagbaum was first mentioned in 1770. In 1940 the cross was cleared away by German soldiers so that their heavy vehicles could pass through. In 1945 it was rebuilt by the village community. The old, cast iron body was reused. Looking back at the time of National Socialism and the war, the inscription "In the cross alone is salvation" was chosen.

Moorshoven fire brigade

The entire former municipality of Beeck was also the fire fighting area of the Moorshoven volunteer fire brigade for many years . The fire fighting group was founded in 1894 when the number of fire engines in the former mayor's office in Beeck was allowed to be increased to six and Moorshoven was awarded the contract for this sixth fire engine. In the following decades the Moorshovener fire brigade was modernized again and again. In 1908 she built the Steigerturm , in 1952 the motorized sprayer was used for the first time, in 1958 the first fire engine was handed over, in 1966 she got a new all-wheel drive vehicle with a built-in extinguishing water tank for 800 l of extinguishing water. In 1986 the new, self-built fire station was inaugurated. A new LF8 / 6 vehicle was handed over to the fire fighting group in 1990. With the local reorganization in 1972, the Moorshoven fire brigade was transferred to the Wegberg volunteer fire brigade, Moorshoven fire fighting group. In 1989, the Moorshoven fire fighting group was awarded the Beecker Flachsmarktpreis for their constant, selfless commitment.
