Location description

Although the Slipsbach is only a thin trickle today, it has a double meaning for Merbeck: it provided the basic structure when the site was laid out. The courtyards are lined up on both sides parallel to the stream. Their fields ( hooves , one hoof = 30 acres ) lay in strips behind the farms to the edge of the forest. In this way Merbeck was created as a forest hoof village. The brook is also responsible for the naming of the place. As yet the Tranchotkarte (1806) shows this area, it forms small within the village pond , pond , which also Maare be mentioned. The number of farms has decreased a lot over the last century. Even after the Second World War, there were around 17 farms; today there are only four.

history

The place appears in a document from 1295 under the name Marbach : Village that lies on a stream that forms maars. Over the centuries this name changed to Marbach, Marbech, Marbeck and Merbeck. There were a number of well-known farms in Merbeck in earlier centuries. The Houbenhof and the Herrenhof were owned by the Cologne Cathedral Monastery from 1295 to 1790 . Today only a few street names are evidence of its existence: "Am Houbenhof" and "Herrenbruchweg".

Merbeck belonged to the parish and parish Niederkrüchten from the beginning. In 1818, at the request of its residents, the Bishop of Liège, who was responsible at the time, raised the town to an independent parish . A chapel , which was mentioned as early as the 15th century, served as the parish church . This was expanded in 1824 with an attached nave . In this form it served its purpose for three quarters of a century, but then became too small.

In 1904 the foundation stone was laid for a new parish church, St. Maternus . It was built and furnished in the neo-Gothic style according to plans by the architects Carl Rüdell and Richard Odenthal from Cologne . It is a three-aisled brick church with a transept . The four-story tower in the east has a slim eight-sided helmet .

Near the parish church on the corner of Maternus-Strasse and Arsbecker Strasse is a memorial designed by Hein Minkenberg for the fallen and missing of the two world wars, it was inaugurated on June 29, 1921. In the gable it shows Archangel Michael fighting the kite. Four more chapels can be found in Merbeck.

On January 1, 1972, Merbeck was reclassified from the community of Niederkrüchten to the community of Wegberg.
