history

Until 1818 Merbeck was a branch of the parish of St. Bartholomäus Niederkrüchten . However, at the request of the residents, Merbeck was raised to an independent parish that year .

At that time there was also a church in Merbeck. It was built in the 18th and 19th centuries. Century. In 1893, the pastor at the time, Joseph Heyden, submitted an application to the Cologne Vicariate General to build a new church on the place of the old one, which had become too small. Subsequently, a church building association was founded in 1901. The Cologne architects Carl Rüdell and Richard Odenthal , who had a joint office, were commissioned to build the new parish church . On July 21, 1902, the construction plans were approved by the Vicariate General and so the church could be built between 1903 and 1904 on the site of the old church after it had been closed. The first service was celebrated on October 31, 1904 and the consecration of the three-aisled, neo-Gothic hall church with a bell tower , transept and choir closed on five sides took place two years later on July 26, 1906.

In February 1945 the structure was slightly damaged as a result of the Second World War . This damage was repaired by 1953. The ornamental wall paintings were whitewashed with white paint. Around 1989 the painting was uncovered and restored, whereby the interior has regained its original spatial impression.

Since January 1, 2013 Merbeck is no longer an independent parish. The parish was with some other former parishes of the parish of St. Martin Wegberg merged . Since then, St. Maternus has been a branch church of this new large parish.

Furnishing

In addition to the ornamental wall and ceiling painting from the time it was built, almost the entire neo-Gothic interior of the church has been preserved. Of these, the richly carved wooden high altar with two associated side altars in the side aisles, the small choir stalls in the choir, the stone baptismal font, and the relief-like Stations of the Cross and the confessionals are to be mentioned .

The stained glazing of the windows has also been completely preserved from 1904. Some windows were designed by the artist Friedrich Stummel from Kevelaer . The remaining windows were designed and manufactured by the Wilhelm Derix company from Goch .
