St. Mary's Assumption in Rickelrath

St. Mariä Himmelfahrt is the Roman Catholic branch church in the Wegberg district of Rickelrath in the Heinsberg district ( North Rhine-Westphalia ).

The building is entered under number 88 in the list of architectural monuments in Wegberg .

history

In 1683, Vicar Matthias Poorten from Oberkrüchten had a chapel built in Rickelrath on his own initiative, as the village had not had its own church until then. This chapel was transferred to the Capuchin monastery in Sittard in 1700 . In 1710 the chapel was replaced by a larger hall church in Baroque style . Around 1830 a bell tower was added to the west side. Until 1804 the place was also a branch of the parish St. Peter and Paul in Wegberg. Only then was Rickelrath raised to an independent parish . Thus the church received the status of a parish church . The church building existed in this form until 1953. In that year the barrel vault collapsed and the church was torn down except for the bell tower and the south wall. Between 1953 and 1954 it was rebuilt in a modified form according to plans by the Erkelenz architect Heinz Tillmanns, including the remaining components. The tower also received its current appearance. The consecration took place on May 8, 1955.

On January 1, 2013 the parish merged with the other Wegberg parishes to form the new large parish of St. Martin Wegberg. Since then, St. Mary's Assumption has been a branch church of this new parish.

Furnishing

In the interior there is a baroque high altar and a baroque pulpit . These were taken over from the old church, as was the organ made by the Paderborn organ building company August Randebrock in 1870. It has 7 registers distributed over the manual and pedal. Most of the stained glass windows were created by an unknown artist around 1955. Three windows that were created around 1900 have also survived.
