Measuring station
As a measuring station (formerly measuring station ) is a grouping of instruments referred to continuously measurements of selected parameters of the water , the air , the ground , of buildings or of satellite signals carry. Most of the time it works automatically , some are temporarily manned by specialist staff.
Depending on the intended use and environmental conditions, the stations can be installed on the surface or just below it, on buildings, floating units or on masts. There are also measuring stations in space , they are called research satellites or space probes .
The energy is usually supplied via the power grid or with solar panels . Some, especially older measuring instruments also work photographically (e.g. for registering the duration of sunshine ) or have a drive with a spring mechanism . Data is usually transmitted automatically via landline telephone, GSM or DSL at regular intervals or when warning thresholds are exceeded. With old systems, the analogue recordings are collected manually and subsequently edited or digitized.
Important types of measuring stations are:
- automatic sensors of a weather station for weather observation but also wind profiler and weather radar
- Sensors for environmental monitoring , for example air quality and particulate matter pollution
- Monitoring of water levels in bodies of water
- Measurement of marine environmental parameters with the help of floating platforms, for example the platforms of MARNET from the Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency
- Monitoring of environmental radioactivity by the Federal Office for Radiation Protection for early warning of increased radioactivity
- CTBTO measuring stations that use radionuclide detectors to measure special radioactive particles and the concentration of radioactive noble gases that are only released during nuclear weapon explosions .
- Monitoring devices at observatories
- Equipment for building or soil mechanical settlement measurements
- Monitoring of earth crust movements
- Earth rotation and satellite stations .
- Monitoring of releases of dangerous substances in chemical plants or nuclear power plants
Special measuring stations
- Hessdalen AMS , automatic measuring station for the registration of unidentified, floating light phenomena near the Hessdalen mountain valley
- Shirleys Bay measuring station , equipped with radio and radio eavesdropping equipment, Geiger counters and cameras for detecting UFO activity
- Hafelekar measuring station , a cosmic radiation observatory
- FINO research platforms in the North and Baltic Seas
