As a measuring station (formerly measuring station ) is a grouping of instruments referred to continuously measurements of selected parameters of the water , the air , the ground , of buildings or of satellite signals carry. Most of the time it works automatically , some are temporarily manned by specialist staff.

Depending on the intended use and environmental conditions, the stations can be installed on the surface or just below it, on buildings, floating units or on masts. There are also measuring stations in space , they are called research satellites or space probes .

The energy is usually supplied via the power grid or with solar panels . Some, especially older measuring instruments also work photographically (e.g. for registering the duration of sunshine ) or have a drive with a spring mechanism . Data is usually transmitted automatically via landline telephone, GSM or DSL at regular intervals or when warning thresholds are exceeded. With old systems, the analogue recordings are collected manually and subsequently edited or digitized.
