MARNET (BSH)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

MARNET , the full name of the measuring network for automatically registering stations in the German Bight and the western Baltic Sea , is the name of a measuring network operated by the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH) with twelve measuring stations in the German Bight and the Baltic Sea . It is used to monitor the marine environment .

history

Measurements such as temperature and salinity have been determined in the German Bight and the western Baltic Sea since 1872, initially on board light ships . The manned lightships were later replaced by unmanned lightships. From 1984, unmanned platforms were used as measuring stations. The last manned lightship named "Borkumriff IV" was decommissioned in July 1988, the last unmanned lightship named "Elbe" was not replaced after it capsized in a storm in December 1999.

In 2002, which was research project FINO ( F orschungsplattformen i n N properly and O stsee) is started; It is funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety and serves to support technological developments and to gain knowledge about the effects of the technology of offshore wind turbines (OWEA) on marine flora and fauna .

Of the twelve MARNET measuring stations, 11 are active in 2019.
