The lighthouse Kiel stands off the coast in the central Kiel Bay off Kiel as a guiding and orientation light and, in addition to numerous measuring devices, also houses a pilot station .

Construction / construction

The foundation of the lighthouse in Kiel consists of three individual foundation bodies made of reinforced concrete (each 30 m long, 18 m high and 13 m wide), the tower is made of aluminum. The foundation has a right-angled shape similar to an L. The right-angled tip of this platform points exactly to the northeast, as the highest swell can be expected from here. The foundation has four berths to ensure that the pilot boats find a protected berth even when the waves are high.

When the lighthouse was built, a completely new construction method was used, the floating box foundation. The three concrete floating boxes produced on land were dragged across the prepared subsoil, sunk down to the nearest centimeter, filled with sand and the prefabricated aluminum tower (weight around 53 tons) was placed on top with a floating crane. The lighthouse is supplied with energy via a 6 kV high-voltage submarine cable that ends at the Bülk lighthouse near Strande. If the grid fails, 2 × 50 kVA emergency power generators are available in the tower. The construction costs amounted to 9.5 million  DM .

use

The Kiel lighthouse serves as a guiding and orientation light for the approach to the Kiel Fjord , the “Kiel-Flensburg-Weg”, the “Kiel-Ostsee-Weg” and the “Kiel-Fehmarnsund-Weg”. In addition, it serves with red warning sectors as a warning light for the shallows “Stollergrund”, “Gabelsflach” and “Kleverberg”. At the same time, it serves as a pilot station for pilot district 1, Kiel Fjord. This includes the routes between the locks in Kiel-Holtenau ( Kiel Canal ) or the port of Kiel and the Kiel lighthouse pilot station. There is still a radar beacon on the tower.

The tower with the international serial number C 1215 replaced the Kiel lightship. The last lightship used there was the Alexander von Humboldt , which was previously called Kiel . The fire colors of the lighthouse are white, red and green. The nominal range of the 400 watt lamp with the color filters is 14 to 17.6  nautical miles . The Lübeck Waterways and Shipping Office is responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the tower ; the fire is monitored and remotely controlled by the traffic control center in Travemünde .

Measuring systems

On or on the island there is a level system, a measuring device from the BSH , an ODL probe for monitoring environmental radioactivity from the Federal Office for Radiation Protection and a weather station from the German Meteorological Service and the Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel . The data that IFM-GEOMAR collects is displayed in a showcase on the keel line at the institute and is available on the Internet.

Extreme levels that deviate more than 150 cm from the mean water level have so far been measured 10 times at the Kiel lighthouse. Storm flood on December 31, 1978 151 cm above mean water level, on February 15, 1979 181 cm, on January 13, 1987 150 cm, on November 4, 1995 186 cm, on November 1, 2006 170 cm. On November 25, 1981 measured 175 cm below the mean water level, on November 6, 1985 172 cm, on January 26, 1990 166 cm, on December 4, 1999 185 cm, on January 9, 2005 157 cm.

Perspectives

Although the tower is used in a variety of ways, its future is not entirely secure. It is questionable whether the federal government will permanently raise the necessary money for the maintenance. The responsible water and shipping authority has already looked for ways to carry out the pilot operation from the mainland.
