The Wuppertal-Barmen station (also called Barmer station ) is a Wuppertal stop and a former station on the Elberfeld – Dortmund railway line . The station building is a listed building . Originally it was the main train station of the city of Barmen, which was independent until 1929 . Before the war it was an important express train station and had a large goods handling department , its importance decreased after the war in favor of the Oberbarmer station and at the latest since the renaming of the Elberfeld station to Wuppertal main station .
Reception building
The rectangular shell limestone building in neoclassical shapes is nine-axis with pilasters , in between with arched windows above the basement. Of the two laterally protruding five-axis risalits with Ionic columns in front, only the western one has survived after the war. A portal rises above this wing of the building with a flat triangular gable , tall rectangular windows and oculi in the wall panels under the entablature . There is a small semicircular window in the gable triangle. The middle axis is decorated with a clock whose letters “Wuppertal Barmen” replace the digits. The building is opposite the former hotel and today's senior citizen center Wuppertaler Hof .
history
Opening and first reception building
With the opening of the line on October 9, 1847, the first station building was opened as Barmen station by the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft . In 1905 the name was changed to Barmen Hauptbahnhof . The first building stood a little further to the east than the current building and was demolished.
Relocation and construction of the new reception building
The station building on Winklerstrasse, which is only partially preserved today , was built from October 1911 in a two-year construction period and was opened to the public on October 10, 1913. The construction was based on plans by the high-ranking Prussian construction officer Alexander Rüdell , who held a leading position in the railway departments of the Prussian Ministry of Public Works . The execution was in the hands of the government master builders Johannes Ziertmann and Eduard Behne at the Elberfeld Railway Directorate . The building was badly damaged during World War II .
The station building was on 1 July 1988 under monument protection provided.
Use of the reception building since 1991
In March 1991 a restaurant and event company headed by Alfred Biolek opened the Barmer Bahnhof disco in the premises. In the 1990s it was one of the largest in the valley. Due to fire protection requirements , which were associated with high investments, operations had to be stopped in June 2001.
At the end of 2007, there were signs of development in the building that has now been unused for a long time. According to the concept of an investor, an upscale restaurant is to be located there. After a year of negotiations, the investor will take over the property for around half a million euros and, according to his estimates, invest around two million in the renovation. At the end of January 2008, however, there was uncertainty about the future of this project, the Westdeutsche Zeitung claims to have received information that the investor was insolvent.
On August 25, 2008, the Viennese opera singer Kurt Rydl bought the Barmer Bahnhof for 540,000 euros. Structural measures on the facade as well as in the interior area should make the station attractive again. An upscale restaurant was planned for the premises, and tenants from art-related areas were also sought. The Jos. Linz & Sohn should also be retained, especially since the owner is the buyer's brother-in-law.
On December 8, 2008, the new owner invited to a press tour of the Barmer train station. Rydl revealed that he had bought the station without knowing exactly what the building was. Only because of the proximity to the Wuppertal Opera House , the railway operations and the family relationship, he would have decided to buy. The visible work on the roof, the fence to the tracks and the clearing of the small trees were only the first steps towards a cultural station. However, Rydl is in no hurry to set up a high-quality restaurant or to convert the 600 m² on the upper floor into a small venue for the Wuppertal theaters . The fire protection regulations, which was the reason for the closure of the former Alfred Biolek disco, allowed a maximum of 199 spectators.
The reopening of the event rooms in the western part of the building was planned for 2010. The operator should be the Bochum catering service provider Eßkapade .
At the beginning of November 2010 it was clear that Martina Steimer would continue her Forum Maximum, which was closed in the Rex Theater , in Barmer Bahnhof. On February 7th, 2011 the new Forum Maximum was officially opened in Barmer Bahnhof; Wuppertal Mayor Peter Jung was among the 600 guests . As early as February 28, 2011 it became known that Steimer and Rydl would not continue their cooperation due to financial differences.
Since September 2011, events in the upscale segment (disco, live events) have been running under the management of a new operator.
