The Kleinenbroich station is a station of the train station Category  5 on the railway line Moenchengladbach-Dusseldorf . The station building from 1851 is listed as a monument in the list of architectural monuments in Korschenbroich .

location

The train station is in the center of the Korschenbroich district of Kleinenbroich . It becomes the traffic junction for the east of Korschenbroich (Kleinenbroich, Glehn, Steinforth) through the S-Bahn line S 8 of the S-Bahn Rhein-Ruhr and the bus routes.

Kleinenbroich is accessed in the east by state road 361 and south by state road 381. The train station is connected to traffic via smaller city streets. There are P&R parking spaces on both sides of the station , which are also used by passengers from the surrounding districts.

The old town center of Kleinenbroich with the church is located south of the Mönchengladbach – Düsseldorf railway line. In the last century Kleinenbroich has developed very strongly to the north, so that today the railway line separates the northern residential areas Rhedung and Auf den Kempen , as well as the Püllenweg industrial area from Alt-Kleinenbroich, and direct traffic connections are only available via the existing tunnels and overpasses. In terms of urban planning, this is not a favorable situation.

history

Railway station at the beginning of the 20th century

Kleinenbroich station was built in 1851 by the Aachen-Düsseldorf-Ruhrorter Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft as the only station between Mönchengladbach and Neuss and opened in January 1853 with the commissioning of the railway line from Mönchengladbach to Düsseldorf. Initially, the station was also the station for the communities of Korschenbroich and Büttgen . In order to meet the needs of the communities of Korschenbroich and Büttgen, Kleinenbroich had a large loading platform and two freight sidings. In 1870 Korschenbroich was given its own station due to its importance for transport.

Signal box Kf, 2013

Until the 1980s, Kleinenbroich station had a signal box at the eastern entrance to the station, at the corner of Bahnhofstrasse and Matthiasstrasse, which was demolished when the line was expanded for the S-Bahn service. A second signal box was located as a guard signal box on the western side of the station area on Neusser Straße in Pesch . The dispatcher had his seat in the signal box at the station. It was also torn down when the S-Bahn was introduced. A new relay interlocking was erected opposite, which now took over the monitoring of the Mönchengladbach – Neuss section. The signal box is in turn remote controlled from the signal box Nf in Neuss Hbf .

With the construction of the S-Bahn, the level crossings at the train station and on Neusser Strasse were closed and replaced by a pedestrian underpass at Bahnhofstrasse , the Holzkamp underpass and an overpass at Kreisstrasse 23. The train station was also redesigned. Instead of the previous platforms, a central platform was created. For overhauls on the regular track from Neuss to Mönchengladbach, as well as from Mönchengladbach to Neuss, an overtaking track was laid west of the station, which can be entered from both directions via switch routes, thus enabling trains to be overtaken in both directions.

In 2014, the station was extensively redesigned by Deutsche Bahn. The central platform originally built with the operation of the S-Bahn was demolished and replaced by two barrier-free outer platforms. The area around the station was also made barrier-free by the city of Korschenbroich with a grant from the state of North Rhine-Westphalia . For this purpose, the existing stairs were supplemented by pedestrian ramps.

In contrast to the also rebuilt Korschenbroich station , there are roofs on the platforms , as more passengers use the station in Kleinenbroich. Roofed bicycle stations and lockable bicycle boxes were also built.

Station building

Station building from Ladestrasse, 2014

The station building was built in the classical style and is a listed building. It consists of a two-storey, three-axle station building and an attached single-storey, single-axle goods shed. The reception building has a flat sloping roof, which is arranged at the gable facing the loading street or railway line. A roof beam shows the year 1851. The French doors on the ground floor are arched and the windows on the upper floor are rectangular. The plastered facade is banded.

In the building of the old Kleinenbroich train station, some associations have their headquarters today.

Monument description

Representation of the main characteristic features of the monument: The mutual interests of Düsseldorf, Mönchengladbach and Aachen led to the construction of the Aachen-Düsseldorfer Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft in 1851/52. This railway company built a type station at its stops, as it is still today in the reception buildings of Herzogenrath, Geilenkirchen, Lindern and Kleinenbroich. The reception buildings of the first three listed locations show later changes. The Second World War in particular had an impact on the building fabric of Lindern and in particular of Geilenkirchen. In the Geilenkirchen building, the resemblance can only be guessed at because of the subsequent change to the arched windows in rectangular formats. The largely unchanged example was preserved in Kleinenbroich.

The original building consists of a two-storey, three-axis building with arched openings to which a single-storey, single-axis extension was attached to the left of the tracks. In keeping with the times, the facade was plastered with ribbons, and a cornice on the level of the window sills on the first floor . The arched openings were decorated with a bulge-like accentuation of the lintel and the windows on the first floor with architraves . The gable window under the neo-classical, flat-sloping roof again referred to the windows on the ground floor, while the roof space was illuminated by horizontal rectangular formats. All openings were bordered by cornices. The building, erected at the gable facing the track, was used to handle the passengers departing from Kleinenbroich, Büttgen and Korschenbroich, as well as their arrival and the handling of goods shipped from here: cooper's goods, wooden shoes, silk and velvet. The Aachen-Düsseldorfer Eisenbahn, which was taken over on January 1, 1866 following the resolution of the general assembly of the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn, had not made any changes to the station building until the takeover in Kleinenbroich. The subsequent Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn also left the construction unchanged. Only the Royal Prussian State Railroad - as the successor to the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn - changed the interior of the building insignificantly when the barrier was introduced. The passage to the platform was built and was therefore created during the period when platform barriers were set up in the 1890s. The last change took place after the Second World War by installing new windows with single-pane sashes, in which the skylights also disappeared. It is no longer possible to precisely determine when the windows under the eaves in the attic were enlarged.

The station is entered under no. 149 on November 21, 1988 in the list of architectural monuments in Korschenbroich .
