The Schwelm railway station is the main train station in the territory of the district town of Schwelm . All Regional Express and S-Bahn trains stop here today , and long - distance passenger rail trains run through.
history
The station was opened in 1847 by the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft and is located on the Elberfeld – Dortmund railway line . Since its inauguration, the station has been rebuilt several times, the first time in 1865. In 1902, the platforms were roofed and on November 8 of the same year an underpass to the second platform was completed. In 1934 Schwelm became a railway junction when the Witten – Schwelm line, built by the Deutsche Reichsbahn , was opened.
In 1988 the station was connected to the Rhein-Ruhr S-Bahn network, the S 8 line from Hagen via Wuppertal to Mönchengladbach stops here. For this purpose, the Deutsche Bundesbahn built an overpass structure in the 1980s : the S-Bahn tracks running parallel to the mainline line from Wuppertal to Schwelm cross under this route in the direction of Hagen directly behind Schwelm station, from here the S-Bahn uses to Gevelsberg West the tracks of the now partially disused railway line Witten – Schwelm .
Structural conditions
The station has four passenger tracks, which are accessed via two central platforms. The S-Bahn trains on lines S 8 and S 9 stop at tracks 1 and 2, the trains on the regional express lines RE 4 Wupper Express , RE 7 Rhein-Münsterland-Express and RE 13 Maas-Wupper-Express use tracks 3 and 4, which are also used by the long-distance trains passing through. Only the platform on the S-Bahn tracks can be reached by elevator .
Apart from ticket machines , tickets can only be bought in the VER customer center on the station square.
Signal box
The Sf interlocking ( S chwelm Bf, F ahrdienstleiter) type Sp Dr S 600 controls the Schwelm and Gevelsberg West stations. It is not locally staffed, but is from the interlocking Of (Wuppertal O berbarmen, F ahrdienstleiter) at Bahnhof Wuppertal-Oberbarmen remotely.
business
Local rail transport
The passenger trains of the RE 4 and S 8 lines stopping in Schwelm are currently operated by DB Regio NRW GmbH under a transport contract with the Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR).
Since the timetable change in December 2009, line RE 13 has been operated for 16 years by the Eurobahn , which won the line following an EU-wide tender.
The RE 7 line was tendered in 2015, here National Express won the tender and was able to start operations in December 2015 with Bombardier Talent 2 trains.
From the 2020/2021 timetable change, line RE 4 will also be operated by this company with vehicles of the type Siemens Desiro HC as part of the Rhein-Ruhr-Express preliminary operation , following the tender also won by National Express .
As part of the funding cuts for local rail passenger transport , the VRR had to cut benefits. Since the timetable change in December 2007, the S 8 has ended once an hour at Schwelm station. Since the timetable change in December 2009, it has ended once an hour in Wuppertal-Oberbarmen, so that in Schwelm there is a 20/40 minute cycle on the S 8. Since May 2020, line S 8 has only been running every hour to Hagen, but since then line S 9 has also been running there every hour, which means that there are still two journeys per hour on this section.
Transportation
Schwelm train station is an important junction for local public transport . The express bus line SB 37 runs here to the S-Bf. Hattingen Mitte and Bochum Hauptbahnhof , which is operated jointly by the Ennepe-Ruhr (VER) transport company and Bogestra . The city bus lines 550, 556, 557, 565, 566, 568 and 586 of the VER as well as the line 608, which is operated jointly by the VER and the Wuppertal public utilities , also stop here .
