Railway stations in North Rhine-Westphalia |
Essen-Überruhr is a stop and a former train station in the Hinsel district of the Überruhr district of Essen . It is one of two S-Bahn stops in this district. The other is called Essen-Holthausen in Überruhr-Holthausen.
Location and structure
The stop has two side platforms. These can be reached via stairs. A bridge structure leads from the two side platforms over Langenberger Strasse, which runs parallel to the east of the railway line, to Nockwinkel Street. Due to static reasons, this bridge was closed until August 24, 2016 and no longer accessible. After three days of repair work, it was released again. West of the railway is a water protection area and further, on the other side of the Ruhr , the district of Rellinghausen . Therefore the train station is not connected to Rellinghausen. Instead, Rellinghausen is reached via the Konrad-Adenauer-Brücke (Marie-Juchacz-Straße) several hundred meters south , which crosses the Ruhr. The bus stop located there is called Lehmanns Brink .
In the area of the Überruhr train station, the railway line has two tracks. A few 100 meters to the north is a transfer point from which the railway line runs as a single track to Essen-Steele .
History and character
The first station in Überruhr was opened in 1844 as the end point of the railway line from Wuppertal under the name Steele opposite in the area of the street Drehscheibe . From 1861 the Bergisch-Märkische Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft built the Ruhrbrücke Steele and with it the railway line to the former train station Königssteele (now Essen-Steele Ost ). The railway line completed the Prince Wilhelm Railway Company .
After the bridge was completed in 1863, the old Steele station opposite still served as a route control post. As a replacement for it, the new Überruhr station was built in the area of today's Langenberger Straße, from which today's breakpoint emerges. In 1950 the name was changed from Überruhr to Essen-Überruhr . In 1968 the station building was demolished. In 1978 the station was rebuilt and rededicated as a stop a year later. In 1978 the new connecting curve from Überruhr to Steele was built. This eliminated the need to head the trains in Essen-Steele Ost.
Until 1998 he was served in passenger traffic by the local transport line N 9. In 1998, as part of the re-sorting of train numbers between Haltern am See and Essen, the S 9 and between Essen and Wuppertal the RB 49 were introduced. After the line between Essen and Wuppertal had been fully electrified, the RB 49 was replaced by the S 9 S-Bahn line in December 2003, which has since then continuously connected Haltern and Wuppertal again.
service
Since 2003 the S 9 has been running every 20 minutes on weekdays between Wuppertal via Essen to Bottrop , and once an hour to Haltern am See . Since December 2019, the S 9 has only been running every half hour.
