The Essen-Kray Süd stop is one of two rail stations in the Kray district of Essen . The other is Essen-Kray Nord on the Essen-Gelsenkirchen railway line .

history

The station was opened as the second Krayer station after the aforementioned Essen-Kray Nord from 1873, in 1896 with the name Kray Süd . He contributed to the development of Kray and the neighboring Leithe during the period of industrialization in the Ruhr area . In 1929 Kray was incorporated into the city of Essen. In 1950 the station was given its current name Essen-Kray Süd . In 1974, after removing all switches and side tracks, it was classified as a stopping point .

Location and structure

The stop is in the south of Essen's Kray district, about 300 meters west of Krayer Strasse. Compared to the Essen-Kray Nord train station , the Kray Süd stop is decentralized, to the south of the federal motorway 40 in a residential area on the border with Essen-Steele . The reception building, which opened in 1896, was demolished in 1999 to create a consumer market. The surrounding streets are called Pramenweg and Am Bocklerbaum . It is also connected to the Steeler Path to the south via a pedestrian tunnel .

It consists of two side platforms, the northern one (platform 1) directly connecting to the station forecourt, while the southern one (platform 2) can only be reached by stairs. This means that Essen-Kray Süd is only barrier-free in the direction of Essen Hauptbahnhof .

service

In the local rail passenger traffic, Essen-Kray Süd is only served by the regional train line from Essen to Hagen called Ruhr-Lenne-Bahn . This runs every hour.

Link with public transport

The Essen-Kray Süd stop is connected to the Ruhrbahn bus service via the Kray Süd Bf stop on Krayer Straße, about 300 meters to the east . This is approached with lines 144, 146, 194 as well as in night traffic from NE3 and NE14. Line 144 also stops at Pramenweg , this transfer option is about 165 meters north.

future

There were plans to move the Essen-Kray Süd stop closer to Krayer Strasse in order to better connect it to bus traffic.

According to plans for the Rhein-Ruhr-Express (RRX) project, the RE16 and RB40 lines could be routed via Steele . Since the other RE lines that pass through Essen-Kray Süd today without stopping, even as RRX lines, will not stop in Essen-Kray Süd, this would mean the closure of the stop. The German train was already known this.
